Looking to buy an 85 van to pull my '25 Airstream around. Runs good , daily driver, good chasis. We live in Southwest Co/NM and do alot of mountain driving. Will she pull it ?
Any mods ? Rebuild? Refresh? Source for Remanufactured motor and tranny? Is it a good candidate to convert to 4x4 ? Sorry to ask so many questions?
She will pull it but not that fast. That van only has a 3 speed trans in it and most likely 3.54 gears so if the trailer is about 5,000 lbs be prepared for a slow trip uphill.
There not that bad, but higher the elevations, slower they get....
Higher you go, less air there is.
Less air = less power
AirStream campers are pretty light but those vans are heavy pigs!
And yes, i've seen alot of these 4x4 vans on ebay. not factory ofcourse, but i've heard there pretty easy to convert, providing you have all the right parts to do it.
Yeah I kind of thought that would be the case. My Airstream weighs about 5K empty and pretty much drives itself on the flats,.
"Need More POWER Scotty"
I just had the air filter changed out to K&N and will have the exhaust upgraded and IP timing adjusted tomorrow with the hopes of my 85 E350 will have the best chance to pull my 28foot Airstream. However I am on the Oregon Coast so there will be lots of air to pump through the engine. I am hoping to move my trailer in the next few weeks and will post the results here if you're interested.
A turbo of any sort (even a cheapie used factory turbo) will compensate for air density at altitude. The increased expansion of exhaust gas altitude drives the turbo harder which creates more boost, which returns the power level to what it should be.
The latest Banks kit is made for vans as well. Not sure if it applies to previous models though, be careful if it is bought used. I've noticed on FTE that there seem to have been several variants made over the years.
As for power upgrade, I think when the time comes to rebuild the engine I may consider finding a used turbo. To date this van has impressed me but towing the Airstream will be the true test.
Yeah that's my dilemma also, I really want to be able to pull the airstream. It with this van. I guess I can't go wrong for $1000, she runs good, needs things right off the bat like tires, glow plugs stopped working, and some wiring, a little rust on the gutter.
Finding a used turbo would be the bomb ! Any sources?
