Air filter

Whats the latest on air filters? What do you guys like. I have 82000 on my 6.0 and I have never changed it. I have checked it and it looks good. I know they are expensive but heck at 82,000 miles on an original air filter, thats pretty good!

Just go get a motorcraft? What is everyone else doing these days?

I would stay with the stock filter. It's really hard to beat the stock set-up and really easy to dust your motor with some of the aftermarket stuff out there.

I would use Motorcraft or Donaldson only. I don't know for sure but word around here is that Donalson is the manuf. for Ford so the Donaldson filter is THE SAME as the Motorcraft but like I said I can't swear to that, just what I've read. I can say that you can't go wrong with the Motorcraft.

There is a blue and a white one. Get the blue. It's a synthetic material that repels moisture. That is the one that came stock. And yes, Donaldson makes them for Motorcraft.

If your filter minder hasn't moved yet, then your filter is still OK.

The Donaldson filter will hold about 3 pounds of dirt before it needs to be changed. So if you don't do much off road driving the filter will last a long time. Also the filter is reported to stop 99.99% of air borne contaminants which are larger than 1 micron. For reference the human hair is approximately 74 microns in diameter.

Stick with the Donaldson filter.

Push the test button on the filter minder to be sure it's still OK. Also take it off and check it close to be sure it isn't cracked. If it's good, then your filter's still doing its job. Mine made it to 67K before the minder moved to the first blue line. I could have probably let it go a while longer but I just went ahead and changed it.

I took my filter minder off and sucked on it. The little yellow disk pulled in easily. I assume this means it's still functional. Push the button to release the disk back to it's original position.

Guys I feel like an idiot but I need help. I got a new filter today but the old one WILL NOT come out. I am pulling so hard that the radiator tank is creaking from the intake line holding against it. I hav done everything except cut it out. How in the heck do you get it out??

There is a video posted (may be in the tech folder) of a very easy way to remove the filter. Basically you move the small coolant line going from the radiator to the degas bottle, unclamp the intake from both ends, remove the wiring from the filter minder and MAF sensor and lift the whole assembly out. Notice the two prongs on the bottom of the filter that go through rubber grommets, but they should just "slip" out.

Here are some good instructions: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/articl...icle-06-01.php

I also loosen the first band clamp holding the rear filter housing to the turbo inlet and pull the housing off the inlet tube so it's freer to move around.

Here is the video mentioned by npccpartsman:
