Carburetor problem?
1986 Ford f150 I6, 4.9 engine, carburetor
When my truck is running there is light smoke that comes out from the bottom of my air filter can. Im guessing its from the carb. Question i have is, is this normal? Should I do something about it and if so how can i fix it? I'm guessing that if the fuel mix is escaping, that I might be getting "robbed" of gas mileage. Can someone help and tell me what i should do?
Fuel Filter
Fuel Pump
Distributor
Ignition Coil
Starter
Spark Plugs, wires and cap.
I JUST replaced the Valve Cover gasket about an hour ago because it started leaking oil till the point where it was smoking my car.
Tires are all good and have equal pressure.
I don't know what i could be doing to be getting such low mileage, other than this carb smog escaping problem. Any ideas?
Make sure your egr is hooked up and functioning (this helps the most with mpg) other than driving habits.
Your truck has what is known as a "feedback" carburetor. This was Ford's attempt to bridge the gap between regular carburetors and fuel injection. This system was on 4.9L engines from 1984-1986. The carburetor's mixture is controlled by the computer, which also adjusts the timing. You will notice that you have no vacuum line going to the distributor. If any of your factory emmisions system is inoperative or has been removed, the computor will go into the "safe" or "limp home" mode and your mileage will really suffer.
Use the "search" feature at the top of the page [blue bar] and type in "feedback carburetor" as well as "duraspark" and you will find plenty of reading material.
Look and then ask more questions and we will be glad to try to help. Good luck!
