I am slowly eradicating all the annoying shakes and rattles on my truck and after replacing the drivers side front wheel bearing assembly I jacked up the passenger side to have a look. The bearings seem nice and tight but the auto locking hub "ratchets" (click - click- click) when the wheel is spun by hand. This happens in both directions.
The hub is in the free position but that ratcheting noise is present (you can feel it too) I would prefer to keep the auto lock hubs as I only use the truck for towing my race car and the only time I need 4x is in the snow if I am moving the car from my house to my shop, can this be fixed (are the hubs serviceable) or am I looking at a replacement? I have read the threads on upgrading to the Warn manual locking hubs but am wondering what to do about maintaining the originals.
I looked at those pages and they didn't really help. I took the hubs apart, cleaned and re greased...put everything back together and snap...
still goes click click click.
There doesn't appear to be any glaring damage to the hub, everything looks decent, I suspect that if I played around with them I could find a shim to help "center" the gear within the hub again but I won't bother. For now I will just remove the locking mechanism and put the dust caps back on until I find a solution. Dealer wants $475 a side.
Also on my 2000 excursion my hubs appear to be auto lock only, there is no manual override function.

you can get new motorcraft locking hubs from ebay for 200 a side. sometimes 180!
There is probably lot's out there and I prefer the stock one. They turn just like the expensive aftermarket ones and you can fix them if they don/t
It's nice when the plastic POS **** breaks on the stockers and your stuck in 100 degree weather. I guess it depends what kind of wheeling u do. I don't do any rock crawling or anything but I roll around Johnson valley to check out the hammers. KOH!
I got my warns for $200 from currie, not bad at all.
