so my 2003 f250 oil pan is really rusting, and i have a friend thats a body mechanic that ordered por-15 for it but its really pitted and flaking off im planning on putting 2 coats on. i wire wheeled it and still really bad, my question is what specialtly tools and what do i need to disconnect to lift the motor up enought to get the pan off and change it if the por 15 dont work well. i have lots of tools being that i use to race motorcycles, and fix all my families and work vehicles but no speciatly 7.3l tools. let me know i got a qoute from diesel shop for $1200 labor no parts included i figured i could do it i have a fork lift for work(flooring) that can lif the motor just need to know waht special tools and what are things need to dissconnect?? looks like need to lift about 4 inchs at most. i know por 15 works but how well and for how long in wisconsin with the winter salts on the roads
I just got done putting POR 15 on my pan last weekend. It looked really bad with rust bubbles before I started. I used a flexible putty knife to scrape the bubbles and loose rust off the pan. After that I took a drill with 80 grit disc sander to it on all the easy to reach places and sanded the rust off. Those areas that couldn't be reached with the sanding disc, I did by hand to get most of the rust off. After that I followed the POR 15 instructions etc. It was a PIA to sand and clean the pan, but after applying the POR 15, I'm hoping it will last a number of years. I did not have any leaks before starting.
I also started with a wire wheel, and frankly it didn't clean that much stuff off. The disc sander did a much better job.
If you don't have leaks, I would try the POR 15 process. It's a lot cheaper and less work than lifting the engine.
