Ok so theres even another rear end ford used. Yes my axle hubs stick through the wheel some 6-8in but the fillers on the cover like i stated. Is there a vin code or a rear end code on the door plaque?
Post the door tag info. There is a code for "Axle" and that tells you what you want to know
The Dana 60s (3) I have are all full floaters, as is my Sterling. I haven't actually looked at my '84 351W, I suppose I will. It may be semi. But the other 2 are full floaters.
I'm afraid the VIN doesn't tell us much we don't already know, what we really want is the
Axle code from the door jamb sticker. of course, that only tells us what the truck was
built with at the factory, anybody could have changed that along the way. My book for
1981 says 6001-10,000 is gonna be a Dana 60 or 70 but that was before Ford started
using the Sterling axles on some applications so it's not of any real help here.
If you can read the BOM number on the passenger-side tube and plug it into Dana's site
(assuming you have a Dana and can read the code) that'd likely tell you some stuff
although there may be several possibilities to choose from:
In any event, I've taken my brake drums off several times and never needed any special
tools. Maybe that place didn't want the job? In all reality, doing the rear brakes on these
things *is* something of a pain....
This has all been great info none-the-less. If theres a link for the codes or maybe someone just feels like listing them here that would be a great help for future reference even.
Check the lower webbing of the axle housing. It will either have a 60 or 70 cast into it. It could be on the left or right side, generally on the back but could be in the front.
Hey, in the future, if you want to nominate something for inclusion in that sticky, just
make a post in the Suggestion Box sticky and include the URL of the thread/post
/article/web site you're suggesting be included there, OK?
