I have a 95, 4WD,4.0, about 250k miles or so. Recently the temp gauge started swinging between very low, to about midway, maybe a little more. Dosen' t seem to matter whether or not it is moving or sitting still, still swings. I replaced the t'stat, but made no difference. The heater still works quite well, but it is a little un-nerving to see the gauge move that much. Anybody got any ideas?
Bubbles in the coolant? Brown scum on the radiator coolant?
Does it go up and stay up, or does it swing back and forth during normal operation?
It swings back and forth, though not fast, either way.
There is brown scum in the overflow resevior, though when I changed the t'stat, the coolant was green.
Check compression while the engine is at operating temp.
Check coolant for combustion gases.
Might be a blown head gasket.
What about a a bad radiator cap? I have not seen any oil or water where they shouldn't be, but I will keep checking that. Running a compression on that engine when it is hot will not be fun.
I do have a small leak (ver small) in a rear freeze plug, I wonder if it could have gotten just big enough to cause a sapratic pressure issue in the system?
