quick q

how complicated is it to remove the dipstick tube from the trans to replace the o-ring

I'm not sure about your vehicle but usually it's 1 bolt fastened to the trans bellhousing and out the tube comes. It may be tight and require some twist/pull.

Just looked under my 02 F150 5.4 today and found the dipstick was fastened by one bolt to the underside of the cyl head. There was no room to fasten to the bellhousing as heat shield and cats cover that area.

If we're talking about a 97-03, then it is as Lime1GT said.
I just changed mine and it just pulled out.
The 92-96 models are secured with a brace that is held by one of the top bolts that hold the tranny to engine(on the tranny side),
