I was in Napa the other day, there happens to be headers for the old 300 I6... worth it to buy 'em? what would it sound like, never heard 300-6 with pipes i know its not gonna have that v8 sound (obviously) but just wonderin im sure someone on heres done it or heard one.. so whataya think? and what else would sound decent on it. its an 83 therefore carbed
The Efi manifolds will flow basically the same as the headers and are a fraction of the cost. They bolt right on and seal up tight so you don't have to worry about exhaust leaks like headers. Also, if you put long tube headers on it will block your starter in.
i've heard that.. i think the headers might sound okay i just dont wanna spend the money on a whim and the thrush turbo mufflers or cherry bombs dont give it anything. they dont make it loud or sound like a rice burner for that matter they really dont do much at all.

I might look into that, thanks man. anything else you know of to give it a little somethin?
I've heard them with straight pipes. They sound like diesels, and loud.
I've heard them with cherry bombs, and glass packs and they sound like mad honey bees, some of them. Others sounded alright, but you won't get a V8 sound out of it no matter what you do.
Mine sounds simular to a diesel engine, and I get a lot of comments about it. "That's not a diesel is it?" etc...
I like the stock sound though, and that's what mine is.
I split my after the CAT with duals coming out the back...she is loud when I stand on it for sure. Personally I love sound when I just let of the gas, there’s a nice loud rumble as I cruise down the road. And being a stick, I can really let folks know I’m on my way. Not a V8 sound when just running...but for $150 bucks I would trade my pipes for nothing.

Unless you install a better intake manifold and do some headwork, you'll gain little in the way of power and much in the way of irritation due to exhaust leaks. As has been sugested above EFI manifolds are a good compromise because they actually seal right. But if you're looking for better exhaust sound the headers might just be the ticket. Go to the inline six forum on this site and check out the sticky at the top of the page for exhaust sound files.
Whatever you decide to do, buy a Mr. Gasket # 260 gasket set when you install the new headers/manifold. It's better than even Fel Pro.
Have fun.
