Rules for rep points

Hi -- this is not a complaint.

What are the rules for rep points? ( If I should have found them myself, I apologize).

My question is based on the fact that I have tried to give points to a few folks lately, only to get the "spread the love..." message.

It's a good point, but
1. I don't know who I gave reps to, unless I track them myself
2. I don't know what the rules are for "spreading the love..."
3. There are a few folks on the general forums who are just plain knowledgeable and helpful. Not that almost everyone doesn't try, but these few are exceptional.

Not asking for any changes, just bringing up some points

I don't know the specific numbers, but obviously, you have to give rep to a number of other people before you can give it to someone a second time. Also, you can only give so much rep during a 24-hour period.

I don't worry about the numbers, I just try to give it when I read a good post, irrespective of who the poster is. Many times, it's someone I've just recently repped, so I can't. No big deal, I just go on with my life and don't lose any sleep over it.

Those rules were put in place due to abuse of the system--a lot of mutual backscratching that saw no limits.

The rules are vague on purpose, blame Ken.

They were modified to prevent folks from forming a rep circle to "drive up" rep points. It involves both when you last repped the individual, and also how many others have repped them since then (as best as I can tell)

i am pretty sure you have to give out 25 different reps before you can rep someone again.

25 reps in 24 hours
25 reps before you can rep someone again.

Just more motivation to pass out rep's for knowledgeable and helpful posts.
And I think that's the point of the system.

I think it doesn't matter - you get them if people give them to you or you don't.

I had a lot of hassle with Ken Payne over that - one of the paranoia issues was that a group of people that are no longer part of us formed a "REP RING" where they logged on and each gave rep to each other every night...

KP originally wanted rep to only be given to people who gave right-on tech info or parts connections

On the face of it, it is pure garbage. WHY did it mean so much to them? What the hell was it worth?
And in fact it was not enforceable

In the aftermath the people doing that were banned right out of FTE...
(Unfair players?)

But the truth of it is that rep is just a toy.

Can you trade it in for discounts anywhere?
NO

Does it make you a better person?
NO

If you really think about it - rep on an online community isn't worth JACK SQUAT....

All it is and all that it means is that people like you.

(God only knows why)

And if you go out of your way to fake it - it is purely false

I'm just an old *****, personally

God only knows how many times I have said this

Yeah - I love YOU TOO! Now tell me where I can find the parts I want...

It just doesn't matter

I have been a member of FTE since 2001. There is nothing like it anywhere - so I expect I will always be here - it works

OH BY THE WAY: Points given without a comment are less than points WITH a comment, both plus and minus. Even if all you write in the comment line is "THANK YOU" it adds more points

GW, I agree that they really aren't anything, but it's nice to be able to send a permanent 'thanks'. My only other option is to send $$ ( like that's gonna happen )

But, now I know the rules, so I can deal with it.

Thanks for the details ArdWrknTrk,

I will also pass this along, because it has been MANY TIMES OVER a problem that a little bit of forewarning might could help:

I have seen over and over again the effects of people getting annoyed or outright angry and slamming negative reputation points onto someone that they disagreed with - and it can really lead to some very ugly situations.

I've always thought that it would be a good idea to disable or leave out the capability of sending negative rep to people
~Such an arrangement would still allow positive rep.

In practice what happens is that once you click the magic 'REP' button - YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BACK OR CHANGE IT.
~Yeah - think about that for a second...

If you get up in the morning and realise you had too many shooters while you were online last night and NOW SOMEONE DESPISES YOU; there isn't really anything you can do about it at that point... It's like spilling paint on a concrete driveway, when you sell the house that stuff is still going to be there!

EVEN if you later come back with some positive rep and an apology, the stain tends to remain.

For this reason I believe in what I call "THUMPERS RULE":
(at least as far as REP points are concerned)

"If you can't say nuthin' nice, don't say nuthin' at all..."

~You want to be seriously aware of that.

*If you haven't done so already - look at the bottom of your USER CP page. That's where you find what people have said of you for good or ill

You can make a lot of friends, but you can also make enemies. Doing nothing is much better - particularly since the reciever can instantly tell who slammed them just like you can yourself, and the "DO UNTO OTHERS" idea comes into play.

Next thing you know YOU are unhappy, THEY are unhappy, and it can go around and around

Why?
What for?

It helps nobody...

So the best answer is to stay far away from the "I HATE YOU" button completely. It just doesn't help anyone at all

When and if there are real issues at FTE, that is what we have moderators and admins for.
"NEVER PEE ON AN ELECTRICAL FIRE" (even with the best of intentions), it just makes it worse

How do you add bad rep points? And what do they look like? Not that I would do anything like that, I'm just curious.

When you go to the heart inside the circle on the blue bar at the top of each post - a window pops up for rep points - with me so far?

On that first window you see a pair of check boxes (actually they are round, and called "radio buttons"). The default choice is positive.

If you choose NEGATIVE - you're dropping a BAD on someone...

If I dropped bad rap on you, it would be a lot worse than someone with less rep than I carry could do to you. It would instantly turn your single little green square under how many posts you have to bright red.

I tell ya what - since you asked and it brought out another point (the higher the rep level of the rep giver - the more points are given) I'll give you a simple demonstration.

Right now you have one green square - hopefully this will put you well on the way to a second one.

Negative rep is a nuclear option............I don't care how mad I was at someone, I have never resorted to it, creates too much bad feelings in a otherwise VERY adult and civil forum.

Theres always the "ignore" option available.
(close to using it in another place, right now!)

OK, Thanks for the rep.
I have a couple that are blue or gray in color. What does that mean?

I agree with woflie. The negative reps option should go bye bye. The good rep option annoys the hell out of me too. I spread around as much as I can as I think it's a cool thing to do. It's no different IMHO than standing around with a bunch of friends and slapping your buddy on the back for telling a funny joke.

I've never given neg reps and to the best of my knowledge I've never received any. I will admit, i would be some ole pissed off if I did receive neg reps. IMO, that's like slicing one of my tires because your mad at me. Take your issue up with me like a man if there is one.

I do love this web site. It's full of some great people that are eager help and socialize. FTE is my drug of choice.

I have no idea - I don't see that. But then, I'm a supporter level user and probably both see and don't see things you can't.

I tell ya what - it's good that we have a way to say "That right there - THAT WAS GOOD..."

Elvis would have said the same.

I KNOW, I know - sometimes when months go by and you wonder why nothing you said seemed any good - you wonder if something is wrong.

But it isn't about that.

You can never seem to make it rain when and where you want it to -

Ain't it so?

*I suppose one of the things rep does is to make us try harder to give our very best - but that don't seem to 'git it' for some...

There just ain't no short cuts

In a way (SHOCKING!) I think FTE makes for better people. You do stuff you would not otherwise have done, because you become known for it.
