help! whats happening!

I am on a trip to Iowa from NH. I am towing my camper. Everything has been running smoothly until this am when I hitched up to leave the campground I stayed at. After hitching up my truck, 2005 F350 wanted to stall when tried to start pulling. I let the engine warm a bit more and still seemed to want to stall. As soon as the transmission shifted gears there seemed to be no problem. Got to a stop light and once I got a green light and pressed on the accelerator the engine was chugging andblack smoke was coming from the exhaust! Again the truck shifted gears and seems to run fine. I did put a cetane booster in on fill up. I may have put too much in. But regardless this really concerns me. Please give me some guidance. Eric

which engine?

you're using octane booster so I really hope it isn't a diesel.

6 liter coupled with automatic?
I rented one and had the same problem with cold engine. Hope it will clear after some drive. It is possible that the additive released some dirt in fuel line. Check the fuel filter.

Seems to be doing okay. But I have been on the highway. Stopped at a rest area and will be leaving shortly. Will be interested to see if the problem still exists.

Texasrebel; I said I used a cetane booster, not an octane booster. That would be a bit foolish for a diesel truck.

Your right. I apologize. I have had This truck Got a couple of months. 2005 F350 diesel crew cab 4x4. I tow a 9k lb travel trailer with it. I have been very happy with the truck.

In rochester NY I filled up. I drove 20 or so miles and pulled into a KOA. This morning I started the truck and hitched up as normal. I was on tow haul mode. When i tried to pull out of the site and the truck stalled.

That concerned me. I started it again and let it warm up. It pulled the trailer but was chugging and belching black smoke.

I thought that driving it would clear It up but it didn't. I added diesel 911 and Lucas additive. Above 1700 rpm the engine seems normal. But if I come to a stop and try to move I got black smoke.

I made it to a Walmart and an Auto Zone. Changed both filters added diesel 911 and got back on to the highway in hopes of burning off what ever crap I got on the tank. I assume that is the problem.

Travelled 280 miles in pretty good form. Refilled the tank on Indiana. Left the rest stop normally. Made my exit and two stop lights and the chugging started again. Not as bad but it was there.

I apologize to texasrebel and those that may have been trying to help. I was and still am pretty concerned. I am many, many miles from home and indeed pretty stressed.

If any of you can lend your expertise o would be eternally grateful.

Eric

Black smoke= unburnt fuel. So where that leads is to a 1)turbo issue (not getting enough air) 2) a faulty injector possibly sticking open.
My thoughts.
So to the op. Let's clarify.
05 superduty with a 6.0 psd and a automatic tranny right? No previous problems? No hard starts, choppy idle etc?

That's correct. Truck has run very well. It is automatic.

Took the truck for a test spin. Initially all seemed well. After several loops in an industrial park the truck started to do the same sort of thing. It seems intermittant now. A friend said to now check the air filter, and air to the Turbo. Additionally to see if there is any play in the Turbo charger shaft/bearing.

Please keep feeding info! I appreciate the help.

Looking at the engine there is a tube with blue rubber hose approximately 3" in diameter. It had black residue on it. It looks like part of the tube has a score on it. I pushed on it it does not seem torn.

This price of flexible tube is weeping black fluid. Not sure that it smells like fuel or oil. But the tube is damaged.

If I press on it, black fluid weeps at the scoring. I am going to replace the tube and try it again. Had to wipe a considerable amount of residue under the tube as well.

After talking with diesel mechanics, running two full tanks with additive, it appears the problem is all but gone. Bad fuel. Specifically a quantity of water in the fuel. After running almost bone dry added 1 and a half pints of an additive (saved the bottle, I'll get the name) and Viola. With the exception of a chug or two getting on the highway, I made it through to stop lights with no issues. That was encouraging. then after 1.5 hour of traveling where I purposefully allowed the rpm to fall below 2k the acceleration was smooth and seemed normal.

I stopped at a TA in Iowa. Huge place. Three diesel techs confirmed water in the fuel. They are the ones that had me burn off as much of the remaining fuel I had left, put the additive in and refilled the tank with fresh fuel. I think that once I get through this tank I should be fully in the clear. I want to thank everyone that gave advise. Thank you very much. The scored tube is not the issue But does need replaced.
