No 4WD

my 4 WD quit in the snow storm. The light comes on when I push the button and it sounds like its going in, but the front drive shaft turns freely by hand.
I use it on the beach and 2 WD won't git it.

What have you tried so far?

Did you hear something break?

Any noises that would be loud and abnormal?

take motor off transfer case and see if it's working?

Usually two things fail early on the Bronco's 4WD system: The electric shift engine (the one that engages the 4WD modes) and the auto hubs (wich could also become disengaged if you move backwards after engaging them).

What else you could check? maybe a broke u-joint in the front shaft.

Probably the auto-lock hubs. They suck. Mine went out in a snow storm as well.

If it does end up being them, I would highly recommend just replacing them with manual lock outs. It may be a bit of a hassle having to get out and turn them, but you shouldn't have to worry about them breaking.

Could be a broke chain in the transfer case.

If the front drive shaft turns freely then the transfer case hasn't engaged 4WD so you definitely need to start looking there.

Thanks for the help, I will check the electric shift motor out. If its not working right I would like to rebuild it. I read that this is the cheapest way to fix it. When I get somebody to push the button in I can hear it shifting in, I hope its something easy to fix. It never sounded like something broke.

I would personally swap to manual hubs and perhaps even go as far as placing a manual Tcase in there also.

the reality is your hubs will fail and the motor on that tcase could do this again and its always at the worst time.

Not to jump over you Kem, but the answer is yes, manual t-case has the floor shift.

Joefish, before you assume the electric shift motor is bad, do a little research and make sure that is hasn't just hung up and gotten stuck between shift stops. As t-cases get older and the lubrication breaks down, the shift motor sometimes stall in mid shift. Since the shift module uses micro-switches to determine "where" the shift motor is positioned, if it gets stalled between shift stops the module won't engage it. This is a fail-safe to keep the t-case from being engaged in this situation. Often, removing the shift motor, cleaning it (from an electrical standpoint) and making sure the t-case is fully engaged in either one of the shift positions before reinstalling the shift motor will rectify the problem. Of course it wouldn't hurt to change fluid at this time either.
