Just found this site.I have a 93 f350 that is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. The O/D kicks in just fine and down shifting is smooth. Acts like it may have a shift kit installed. Is this possible? There is no modulater valve I am told on this tranny. Any one have any ideas??? Thanks!

I guess the first order of business would be reading the error codes stored in the computer. See if you have a 452 code. This code should be stored in memory and you don't have to perform the engine-running tests. It may something as simple as bad/frayed wiring or a dirty and corroded VSS plug. Could also be a defective (new) Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Start with the simple stuff.

There was a TSB for this (one of many actually):

PSOM & Odometer Not Working & E4OD Harsh Shift TSB 94-09-12 for 94 Bronco & F Series; PSOM (Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module) may be inoperative or not function properly and the #8 fuse may be blown. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with an E4OD transmission, it may exhibit a harsh shift. These conditions may be caused by trim screws installed through the 17K745 visor wire between the left hand "A" pillar and the left hand visor bullet connector.

A short in almost any wire can mess up the PSOM. Some people reported shorted shorted O2 sensor wires causing problems, a bad diode in the alternator's rectifier, the visor wire above, shorted 4 wheel ABS sensor wires, dome and map light shorts, these stupid things are very sensitive to voltage and frequency transients. So look at blown fuses, cut or shorted wires first.

Pins 4 and 5 from the VSS harness can also be tested for voltage. It should be anywhere from 0 volts (when the truck isn't moving) to 3.5 volts (when the truck is moving fast). If you have a frequency counter on your voltmeter, you can also check the output of the VSS on the same pins 4 & 5.

You can test the VSS itself to see if you're getting around 800-1400 ohms across its two pins. Any less or more and you've got a dud. More than 10 ohms from either of the 2 pins to the VSS metal shell also indicates a faulty unit.

On Edit:

I think I remember that the PSOM will perform a unit self-test when you first turn the key to the on position. If there are any errors, the word "error" will be displayed briefly followed by an error code number. (In the odometer vacuum fluorescent display portion)

I didn't know that they had the E4OD option for 2009 + F150's.....

What's with new users always posting in this forum? It has to be because it is the first on in the list. Before, when I only posted in the Excursion/V10 forum I would never see this. Here it is a daily occurrence.

Yeah - just click on the exclamation point in the upper right of the post and enter "Wrong forum". The mods will move it when they get a chance.

BTW, I've already reported this one.
