It is a lubricated friction fit. Short of a rebuild or replacement i know of no permanent fix.

If it is stripped does the part move or is there additional internal damage to the magnet and drum?

I would lube the end of the cable with vasalene and put epoxy in the part, then put the lubed cable end in and let it setup a bit, then you can remove the cable end and let it cure. The lube will prevent the cable from getting ruined and you could have a temp fix until you can get the part.

Still come across the clusters on ebay occasionally, if not concerned about the condition of the instrument panel one can pick up a cluster with gauges for less $20-$30. Recently purchased both the sweeping and round speedo cluster and paid less than $20 for each, I emailed seller who assured me the gauges work so put in a bid and got lucky. IMO, there are some sellers who are unreasonable with the price but will usually find an unknowing buyer. I receive daily ebay notices for 61-66 Ford pickup parts and there have been 3-4 round speedo instrument panels listed from $10 to $250 over the past week. Anyhow, food for thought.
