Question 302 Mileage

Need help with my 302!! Its not pulling very good gas mileage for a 302. It is in a 1978 F150 4x4 with a t-18 4 speed, 9" rear and 31x10.5x15`s. I`m only getting 9-10 mph highway!!!
I`ve only had the truck since August and have not really done anything to it (yet). When I bought it the engine had 15000 miles on a rebuild, everything was gone through, and a new edelbrock 600 was put on top of a factory 4bbl manifold. Also they put a 351 RV cam, and changed the rear end to lower gears.
Could the different gearing be affecting mileage??? Could the carb need adjustment??? Is the cam to much for it??? HELP!!!

Hey 78 and welcome to FTE.

Moose is right, we need more info. What is the rear end geared now? If the PO went to a lower gear ratio (higher numerically), then your engine is turning higher rpm's to maintain the same speed and burns more gas.

4x4's are heavy beasts to start with. My 85 is about the same as you mentioned and running the same size tire. My truck weighs a little over 5,200 lbs with the tool box I have on back (tools might weigh 600 lbs). I get about 12 combined with my 351W, but then I do have a heavy foot.

I`m not sure on the gearing I`ll have to try to get ahold of the PO to find out. But maybe they went with higher gears to drop the RPM at highway speed??? He mentioned when I bought it that it was running over 3000 RPM at highway speed so thats why they regeared it. Now it runs about 2400 RPM at 60 mph.
Its just drivin to work and fishing on the weekends, and usually I don`t have a heavy foot. Just seems weird to not get maybe 12+ mpg.
