Ok I ran a search but didn't really find the information I was looking for.
What I want to know is what is pitting and what causes it?
I was also curious is there anything that could be done to reverse the effect of pitting?
Also does this cause any problems down the road for the rim?
I know these are noobish questions which may be why I didn't really find the information i was looking for but if someone can help me out I would appreciate it.
pitting is when the wheel paint is gone and road elements (salt) eat away on the aluminum . when the wheel paint starts to go down hill have them repainted , i think its rocks and stuff that hurt the paint the most and they will get bad some what fast
My less than scientific brain tells me that the "pitting" is oxidation of the aluminum alloy that makes up the wheels. There should be a clear coat of sorts applied to the wheels, and when this is comprimised things like excessive brake dust can help increase the oxidation.
I'm sure someone else will give you more knowledge.
As for reversal of the pitting. I don't think so. But a very good thorough cleaning and a light coat of wax should help prevent any more. I just clean my factory 20"s last week, then applied a gentle coat of quick wax spray to the wheels, and today's rain washed a good bit of the brake dust off. IMO, the wax helped.
Well these are rims I am looking at buying for $350 for the whole set of 4 but they look nice but he says they have some pitting. They appear to be a chrome wheel of sorts not sure on the brand yet waiting for more information from the seller. So I am trying to figure out if these would be a decent purchase or should I run from them? Link is below to wheels
They look like Helo Max 6's.They are pretty cool looking wheels but it seems like I've heard others complain about problems with pitting. I can't tell from the pics how bad the pitting is now, but keep in mind they are only going to get worse.
the inside of my rims are doing the same thing but they had road tar on them so I used some carb cleaner on them and rags and wiped it all off. Underneath it was pitted and oxidized. I am in the navy and that is one thing we learn allot about is corrosion, and aluminum isn’t supposed to corrode easy but when it does it. Is most common for it to do exactly what you’re saying and that is pitting. it has a natural barrier that is supposed to self replenish under a certain ph level but if you don’t drive in an area within that level or if it gets scratches it will start electrolysis and then pit. The best way to take care of it would be like what MCdavis said and that is to cover it with a clear coat of some sort or to keep a constant coat of wax on there. that is what I do is just try to keep them clean of brake dust and keep a coat of wax on there and so far so good.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Thanks...I'll contribute my wisdom to the Gentleman Jack that I'm currently sipping on. Ahhhh much needed.
But seriously, powdercoat. Drew there has to be someone here in town that does powdercoating. I'll keep my eye out. You might want to ask the guys at 4 Wheel Speciality if they know of anyone that does.
I was thinking about having them powder coated and I have a place that works with me so they would do it for a good price for me since I send them a fair amount of business. Now I just have to hope that he didn't sell them yet. We shall see in the morning.
Now my problem is if I buy these rims how am I going to swing the tires I told myself I would purchase with my rims when I bought them? Anyone want a slightly used set of Nittos Terras...LOL

I was about to get my Johnny Walker out for the late evening drink tonight

Ha!
Last night it was a Maker's night. Tonight it's GJ.
I say buy those wheels, keep 'em for a rainy day until you wear out the Nittos you have now. Then go big. You're on a 285 right now right? Go to a 315 with the new wheels. How wide are those anyway?

It doesn't say how wide they are and I have two emails to the guy so I expect some more information in the morning and maybe get over to take a look at them tomorrow. I do have the 285/65's now. I would have to go with a 295/70 because the tires I want are only in certain sizes right now.
These rims may be 18x9's but I don't know for certain.
