How hard is it to remove a 4wd 5r55e transmission and replace it ,or possibly rebuild it instead of replacing?..The truck is a 2 door explorer 4wd.im contemplating all options especially since cost is the biggest factor. arebuild kit ive seen is $200 -400 hundred $s and a new reman ford is $2700.im not sure if this might be something over my head or possible to do.If i am to look for a rebuild kit what should i really look for/.. thanks
take no offense to this, but if your asking about help to R&R the trans, a rebuild is most likley way out of the question. There are many special tools to rebuild, seal sizers, installers, the list goes on and on. Ansd on that trans you will need to have the case reamed and sleeved. I just did my wifes, I do transmissions, this was my first 5r55 and it was a total PITA.
easy guys , i think some one might be frustrated. just joking.Yeah im just looking at possibilitys. work is slow now thats why i figured about a rebuild because its just reverse thats bad really everything seems good but i know why take apart a trans with 180k and just replace one seal. im searching salvage yards now seeing that new reman ford is $2700 and other brands rebuilds are between $1000 and $3000.one junk yard wants $500 and its off an 04 with low miles. Its like gambling. Place your bets. i really apprecaite everyones feed back so thanks
I have been rebuilding engines and transmissions for more than 50 years. If you do not have the experience and special tools needed, the cost of tools and the learning curve is just too steep to justify doing one engine or one transmission. Why do you think it cost $2700.00 for a rebuild when the kit is less than $400.00? A late model transmission rebuild should only be done by experienced people with the proper tools. It is a lot more difficult than replacing ball joints or wheel bearings. If you cannot afford a new one, a used one from a reputable salvage yard WITH a warranty might be an alternative.
It is complicated job, but rebuild companies are using minimum wages workers to follow the procedures set in the shop.
I agree that learning curve can be a big issue, but the price of necessary tools is way lower than the price of rebuild transmission.
In other words with proper repair manual it can be exiting project. Than if it won't succeed - all you can loose is the $200 for rebuild kit and your time.
How about the special tools and all that time and effort. If you have plenty of time, a good manual, more like $400.00 + for parts and tools, and good mechanical skills, it is certainly doable. I would not want to discourage anyone from trying it, just be aware of what you are getting into. It takes me about a week-end to pull, rebuild, and reinstall a truck transmission. I have all the tools and many years of experience, but I am also 66 years old and do not have the energy level that I once had. I can do an early model Mustang transmission in one day, but no messing around included.
hmmm i was told by some friends who did a tranny from an early 90's explorer that they were told by a tranny rebuilder that he considered that one of the more difficult. they contacted him for some advice and to check their work. its the first auto the 2 of them even changed oil on, and when it was done they said there was really nothing to it. 4 months later and several thousand miles its running good.
yeah i think im going the replacing it route. im just not sure whether im up to dropping it out myself. i am researching it still. Any one any good places to search for info?..Any tips /tricks would be good .im am pretty well skilled automotively and like i said before works real slow so i got the time to screw around.I dont know about anyone else but i just love to say " what the f**k did i get my self into".Soo guess what ill be doing this weekend .But seriously thanks for the info everyone.Hopefully i get this resolved and ill be a little smarter on this subject. By the way is there any money in selling the old tranny to some one as a core ?..
