8.8 wants out
96 F-150,2wd160,000 miles. 8.8 rear has had enough, whines real bad. Started not so bad, now pretty well screams. Was told 4wd models had 9inch rears. Would love one in mine, didn't seem likely tho. Figure a 9inch can bolt in ok, but was wondering about speedo hookup. Have learned speedo reads from the rearend on my 8.8. Assume this isn't so on the 9inch? Was a 9inch ever installed in a computer era F series?? Thanks in advance for any help. Oh, my trans is the AOD-E. I figured that would go long before the rear.

9" was NOT used after '86, when RABS became standard. You MUST have the ABS sensor in the rear end for your speedo, cruise, ABS, and transmission (which is either the E4OD or the 4R70W - post the code from the door sticker). PM or e-mail me if you want a good '96 8.8".

Chances are your problem is your pinion bearings are shot. You might want to get it checked out and get a couple quotes on replacing them. Unless you have a good selection of tools it's probably not something you want to tackle at home as you need a press etc.
