power steering problems!!!! HELP!!

ok so i have a 77 f150 351M 4x4 so this is my 2nd pump in less then two years the first one was fine till it sat for like 2-4 months while i did a bottom end rebuild on it and a lift kit. then when i started it it was stuck for a sec and then was fine for awhile and then started where u could only turn it when u gave it gas and started leaking and was wining really loud a yesterday it finally died so i put a new one on. it was fine but leaking cause i needed to fix some hoses so after i drove it to school and home i get new clamps and doubled clapped everything that only had one clap. but now when i drive straight and its above an idle its wining but if i'm turning or just at idle it doesn't do it. and i want it fixed before it snows here and I've noticed it seems every time i turn it off it spits some power steering fluid out but i'm not not sure from where. is it the power steering gear box? or just bad luck with pumps? or do i need to flush the whole power steering system? and if i need to flush it how do i do that? and if its the gear box how hard are they to change out is it just a few bolts or what?
thanks yall any help would be awesome!!!!

oh and i noticed when we were filling the pump up when u turned the wheel one way it would push fluid out and the other way would suck it all in so idk if its supposed to do that im not sure how exactly they work.

you probably need to work all of the air out of the system. if you have to change the box, it is really easy.

Mine did the same thing. I bought a new pump. That one did the same thing. I checked and tightened all my hose connections. Then I jacked up the front end. Turned it back and forth to work all the air out again. Much better now. I think you have air sucking in on one of the return hoses.

IIRC, that's a GM-designed pump.... that's the problem!!!

2x with dirtracer of cycling the steering with engine running and front tires off the ground.

Yep. Jack'er up and cycle the steering left to right with the engine running. Any air trapped in the system should work its way out. When the air escapes, those bubbles of air has to escape and I believe that's how come fluid (along with the air) is getting pushed out of the system. I'd also keep the rpms elevated while cycling the steering. Recheck the fluid level and add if necessary since any trapped air is being displaced.

Also, check the tension of the V-belt. Sometimes the whine will come from the belt slipping on the pulley. Look at the inside face - the face that rides on the pulley. If it is glossy then it's a sign that it has been slipping and maybe only at higher rpms.

Mine did the samething replaced portion control valve and pump then hose leaked. Fixed that and it works fne now. Are you using power steering fluid? It take stype f tranny fluid not power steering fluid. Also jack front end up and start truck and turn the wheels all the way both ways acouple times to help work the air out of the system. Jacking it up takes the stress off the steering so your less likely to blow seals. Are you located in WI?

Something to try if there is still air...

After I replaced both the steering box and pump on my '79 F150, it still had air in the system after jacking the front end up and cycling the steering wheel back and forth.

I ended up purchasing a rubber stopper from the local hardware store, drilled a hole in the center for my vacuum pump tubing to pass through, and then applied 15hg or so while cycling the steering wheel first to the right, holding it for a few seconds, and then slowly to the left and holding for another couple seconds. I did this three to five times making sure to check the fluid level so as not to reintroduce air into the system. After about 10 minutes the noise was gone and she steered like new.

If you do go this route, make sure the stopper is just bigger than the filler neck on the pump, otherwise it gets sucked down when you turn the wheel. This is the same procedure that a1cardone recommends on their site and I am satisfied with the results.

Best of Luck
