Anyone use one of these for bodywork? Looks like a pretty neat kit with the slide hammer included. I'm thinking about buying one of the economy kits. Gun, slide hammer, and 100 studs. Looks like they run $120-150 depending on where you buy. Just looking to see if anyone has any experience, good or bad.

A guy I work with has one and it works good. At the shop I work at though uses a machine called Eagle 2. Its more expensive but you dont have to worry about the studs. If not going to use it that much go with it. I pretty sure you'll be happy with it.

I have the Uni Spotter and its worth every penny. I wouldnt do body repair without it. I bought Uni Spotter because its been around for a while and there are different attachments available for the tip of the guns. Some tips allow you to convert the unit into a heat shrinking tool. This works well for stretched metal. The unit works well for minor dent repair. You need to make sure that you are using the right stud. They are rated based on tensile strength and will break at a pre determined stress load. This is important becuase if you get to energetic with the slide hammer you will pull or rip pieces of sheet metal off the vehicle. That sounds rather far fetched but remember, all that stress of you pulling is centered on one spot about 1/16 of an inch in diameter. You are also more prone to tearing the sheet metal if the dent is supported by body lines. Keep in mind that when repairing a dent first in is last out, i.e., all the sheet metal around the dent is pulled or pushed before the actual dent is repaired. Make sure to use the right stud because if you tear the sheet metal you have just tripled your repair time.

Thumbs up Body Stud Welder

I have used one of those many a time for hail damage repair in southwest Texas.I think there well worth the money. They work the best on areas that are doubled like up high on quarterpanels and rockers where you can't get in from the back side. But like cid says don't be to aggressive or you will definately increase your repair time.
