parking lights stay on

For some reason my parking lights stay on on my 77 F100. It was rewired with a Painless about two years ago before I bought it. It didn't do it before, but just started doing it recently. I have to disconnect the battery everytime I get out to keep from draining the battery. any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not an electrical guru, just a die-hard do-it-yourselfer

Possibly the headlight switch.

The dome light is burned out. Is it possible that that could be affecting this?

There is a very slim chance it could be backfeeding through it somehow. Unplug the bulb and see what happens. Otherwise, start at the headlamp switch like Dennis suggested. The switch is the heart of the marker lamp circuit. When you have the problem, take off the plug on the switch to see if the lights go out.

Well... I checked the switch. Actually I replaced the switch. Thank goodness it's one of those things I can take back. I have the same problem. I have no clue where to go next. I have looked for loose wires and have tried to look for shorts and anything that didn't look right. Any more advice?? Thanks again, Jay

If you look at the diagram, the brown wire feeds the park lamps from the headlight switch. What I would do is re-create the problem, and then unplug the headlamp switch like I suggested before. We know now that it is not the switch, but unplugging the switch can tell you if the problem is before the switch, or after the switch.
Basically after the switch, the brown wire is distributed to the lights. So it may be melted into a hot wire somewhere if the lights stay on when the switch is unplugged.

If the the lights go out when you unplug the switch, I would make a diagram of the plug and the wire colors, and then take a small screwdriver and slip it up into the plug to pull each wire one at a time out of the plug. Keep plugging it back in till you find the wire that makes the lights go out. Or you could take a meter and check for voltage, but you will have to look at the diagram and see which wires are supposed to be hot, and which ones shouldn't be. The black/orange is one of the hot wires. Blue/red is another.
