I have a 1964 F100 with a 292 y block engine. I hate to say it but I think the 292 is on its last leg. I would like to take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade to a 351 if possible. At the same time I enjoy driving my three on the tree tranny. Is it possible the 351 will line up, and if it does will the tranny hold up?
The biggest issue; (Not bad) is that your going from a straight axle motor (Front & Rear eng mounts) to a IFS type motor setup (side motor mounts); you'll have to either modified or purchase a engine mount set.
I'm placing a 360/C-6 into a 64 F100 using a mounting bar from Carolina Classic, with stock motor mounts.
I recommend retriving the motor & trans together and use the conversion motor mount bar & transmission bar from donor. and either fine a auto column or use a manual trans with your current column.
I'm a Y enthusiast and I'd like to see it remain in operation so I have to ask, what makes you think it's on it's last leg? Maybe we can fix it.
Will it be worthwhile for you to "upgrade"? Swapping a motor can involve a fair amount of work and expense. Is it really going to get you something better for your intended use?
Ya I am with him a Y is hard to kill. Lets fix it. Rebuilding it will be less trouble and prolly cost than a swap. Don,t get me wrong as I likey the 351W very much. But a Y can do as well and sound a whole lot better and will get more attention at shows and the gas station for sure.
Well you can get a 351 with low miles for $6-800 or if you know what to look for $200 at the yard. As far as the mounts, you'll need the towers and mounts off a 302/ 351 truck, im not sure about the trans :/
After hearing your suggestions and talking to some friends of mine I have decided to keep my y. She leaks oil like it’s her day job and runs pretty rough but I think Ill just rebuild her.
Before you buy a bunch of parts pull the heads and take then down to be magnafluxed for cracks, if there ok disassemble the block and have it tasked and checked also. It sucks too buy a bunch of parts and find out a head is bad.
You have some smart friends! An oil leak and rough running condition may not even require a rebuild. Head over to the Y-block forum and lets see if it's a simple fix.
