I know this is kind of a little ways down the road. I am just doing a little bit of homework before going out to buy the parts to rebuild my 351M in my 79 F150. The question I have is in regards to the distributor.
I have heard about these HEI distributors and that when they are installed, some of the existing ignition components can be removed, as the distributor already has them built on.
I have also heard that with the points distributor, you have to adjust the points every 3,000 miles and replace them every 10,000 miles.
What kind of distributor would be the best for an engine rebuild?
Should I go out and get an HEI or stick with the Duraspark?
I have one of these on my 351M, it eliminates the ignition module on drivers side fender, as well as the coil. It's a very simple hookup. When you call them to order it, have as much info as you can about your motor, as they custom curve them for you before they ship.
So far I love mine, have had it for over 5 months with no issues. Idle quality and throttle response was noticably different.
I also have the D.U.I on my 429 SCJ and am very happy with it, they are big and require an off set air cleaner to clear them, they also clean up the engine compartment by removing a lot of wiring and original equipment ignition modules.
704 those are L&L mated up to aluminum heads, thanks for the kind words its been a long but fun restoration, the finish line is in sight now and I cant wait!
In my opinion, the stock duraspark will be just fine for a rebuilt 351m. I would spend my money elsewhere.
Very true, from what I hear on here with others experiences, the duraspark compares with MSD on stock setups. But there is some value in getting rid of the ign. module and coil. Now-a-days those are cheaply made and are common to fail, unless he wants to spend the money and buy genuine motorcraft, which can be expensive as well.
If he does have the money, the DUI is the way to go IMHO.
If I go with the HEI, what all will be required as far as hook-up? I have read that all I would need is a wire running from the terminal to either the alternator or battery.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
If I get the PerTronix Flame-Thrower, I will have to get the coil and use the ignition box.
If I get the HEI distributor, all I would have to do is run a wire from the distributor to the alternator.
With fords, you will have to run the original coil wire through a relay. Just a regular
12v30a relay I think. Reason being is that the DUI dizzy requires full 12v while running. These Fords have a resistor wire built into the ignition. When you are cranking it pushes a full 12v but when running it only pushes 8-9v through the coil.
I ran mine through the relay as was advised, easy, quick hookup, no problems! I just bolted the relay to the passenger side fender.
I have been researching a little bit more and found a distributor that is close to stock like I want. It is a Proform Parts 66965. If I go with this type, it seems that I will have to use the coil and ignition box.
I've ordered a lot of parts from Summit, if I lived 5 minutes from them I'd be DIVORCED! LOL
I know what you mean. Every time I start working on my truck, my wife says that I am married to the truck. I like having Summit up the road, because I don't have to worry about getting in all the traffic around the small parts houses, and Summit has lots of parts you can't get from the parts houses.
Well I used a 56.00 Procomp distributor on my 408 build. I used a volt meter, and found a hot wire from the four options on the coil that was 12v when the key is on. Removed the rest of the factory stuff, and it works flawlessly. I have 4,000 miles on it, and have been driving it for 1 year and 4 months. Its a great deal really. Has the same design as the DUI one, but for 1/6 the cost or more. Got mine off ebay from a 99% feedback parts seller. Hope this helps. I also used there procomp fuel pump for the 351C and it definately pumps the fuel, and cost like 40.00. I was running out of fuel with the factory pump on my 670 holley.

What was the model number of your distributor that you bought?
