My 302 in my '78 f100 went out so i went searching for a new engine. I found a 351w and c4 trans. for $400. I was told it is a "69 model engine with some stock heads on it that many racers is looking for. Well what do i need to do for the swap. What parts i got now that will work for a 351w (motor mounts, headers)? Thanks for any help or advice
motor mounts are the same, headers should be as well, although they might have some clearance issues, but i dont think they do. You will need to get the crossmember for the transmission if its different than the one in the truck. all the parts are interchangable, i.e. waterpump, alternator.....you get the picture.
351W has a taller deck height and about an inch or two wider overall. Header fitment is the only thing I can think of. 'Should be good to go otherwise since 289, 302, and 351 are all in the family.
69 351W heads sought after because they provide more airflow for a high revving 289 or 302... IIRC, the only issue is 351W heads needs different headbolts with centering washers.
I swapped from a 302 to a 351W. The only mods I had to make was to split the Y pipe cause the 351W is wider. I also had to put my 302 water pump on the 351 cause it exited the opposite side. Everything else was the same.
The 69 heads will not last running unleaded fuel. The heads will need hardened seats installed on the exhaust valves.
Also year has a 2 piece rear main seal.
if you ever rebuild the motor, I believe that year has a slightly shorter deck hieght. which just needs to be know as heads piston interference issue could arise if the wrong rods get used.
