Hi Guys i would like your ideas on changing out the steering box. Any pitfalls or tips you can tell me?? ive never done one before so i would just like your advise. 1988 f350 2wd 460 auto tranny
I have a credit at Advance Auto so thats where im going to get it. I just want to know any things i should do before removing and installing the new steering box. Like i said ive never done one and need some before hand knowledge before i start. Thanks for the response though
You will need a pitman arm puller. (can be rented from autozone, etc) Make sure you get the wheel and pitman arm orientated on the new gear the same way they came off the old one. Going to need a big breaker bar for the bolts that go through the frame and someone to help hold up the new box when you are reinstalling. I ended up replacing both lines going to the pump as well as the pressure sensor due to leaks. Once it is all back together, top up the fluid and turn the steering lock to lock to get the air out of the lines.
I changed it out by myself. It's actually pretty easy. I also got mine from advance. However, the first one I got from advance had a problem when turning right it would not return to center. Also the line coming from the pump to the box would not sit right and had a small leak. I brought it back and swapped it for another and the replacement has been fine.
