just got an 2003 F250 super duty FX4 6.0 with 90,000 miles. and so far i started doing all the routine fluid and filter changes to establish a base line to go off of for a maintnace cycle. while i had the truck on a lift i noticed some kind of seal on the front axle was not were it should be ( i think its grease seal but not sure) does anyone have an axle diagram for this year truck. and what other things should i be looking to do on a truck with this many mile on it. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Did it look like a rubber seal piece, a ring about 1/8 inch wide just hanging there? If it is, the same piece came loose on my 2001 several years ago and doesn't seem to effect anything. I checked the 7.3 forums about that time and it seemed to be somewhat common.
yep it is about an 1/8 inch and made of a hard ruber and it is by the ball joints right were the axle starts. no fluid is leaking and the front diff is full of fluid so i am thinking it may be an outer seal of some sort.
thanks for the reply
Congrats on your new toy! If it's not leaking I think you're ok.
I too bought my 03 with the 6.0 a couple of years ago. I'm up to 125K and the only real work I've had to do to mine is U-joints and carrier bearing. The ones from the factory don't have grease fittings...but the replacements did!
I also recommend sending an oil sample to Blackstone Labs...I was really suprised what they could tell me about the motor from a used oil sample. It really gave me peace of mind (especially since this is my first diesel and we've all heard all of the horror stories about the early 6.0s!).
