Hi folks. I sincerely hope this is a "dumb" question so I can scratch it off of my worry list. I hear a siren type sound from the 6.0 when slowing to a stop by using the transmission 2nd and 1st gears. Like the sound of a siren decelerating. It... sounds cool! Sort of like a turbo Cat when idled down. This is a GOOD sound. Right? I hear the automatic trans whine too, but this is a seperate sound. 2003 f250 6.0 crew cab automatic.
Thanks! dd
daddog here, trying to clarify my question. What I meant to ask is: Is this sound normal and o.k. or is this an indicator of a leak or somthing bad. dd
Don't know if it is normal. Did you just buy the truck. Did it start doing this recently? Do you have mods on it? Need a little more info. 03 are known for their loud turbo whine. You could have air leak on one of the cac hoses or on the turbo exhaust y pipe. But again can't really tell without more info. What are your boost numbers?
Why are you using your manual 2nd and 1st gears to slow down? The Torqueshift® transmission will engine brake when in tow mode on it's own, there is really no need to manually shift into 2nd and 1st. When not towing the brakes will stop the truck fine.
Is the sound present when not manually engine braking?
Don't think its a problem, my 03 also does it. Although I don't shift into 1st or 2nd, just use the tow/haul button to help slow the truck down. As for the transmission whine its also normal. Your loading up the transmission when trying to slow the truck down, most vehicles do this.
thanks for answering , guys. I've had the truck for 5 months, the whine has been there since I owned it. No mods. I dont know my boost numbers or even how to get them. What are the cac's? Are they the rubber hoses that connect the metal turbo plumbing?
I wasn't downshifting in order to be able to stop, just playing with it. ( except for a few time in the steep Colorado mountains when towing a travel trailer, using 3rd and 2nd gear to stay off of the brakes on desent, too many years in semis and truck cranes maybe...brakes overheat and fade real quick on those) as for driving a similar truck , I thought asking you guys would accomplish that, as in Fallguy's answer. Thanks to all of you! dd
