I have a 73 F-100 Ranger XLT with a V8 360 and a C4 trans. I was wondering what the most economical performance boost would be, both for the engine and for the transmission (I already have an aftermarket trans oil cooler). What's the best way to improve gas mileage (I just got the truck relatively recently and don't know what has been done or not.)? I was thinking the carbs may be out of adjustment or several other things. Is there a good sight that tells a lot of this info? Does anyone know what was the stock carb on this year etc. was? Thanks for any help, it is very much appreciated.
I Just sold My 73 f-100. Mine was the 117' wheel base with np435 dana 20 transfer and the 360. It was a sweet truck, I regret seling it but I did a buddy a favor, so its still in the family. i ran a set of ported Aftermarket heads from SNAP auto and the Edlebrock Performance package consisting of 390 performer single plane intake 600cfm carb and a decent sized cam. Duel fowmasters and hooker headers did Great for breathing! The best thing I did, AS well as the easiest is I strapped in a Unilite distributor. Cheap and reliable! You dont have to worry about seting points, or point float. I would try the UNILITE! Its about 150- 200$. Worth every penny.
According to those people that write the performance books in order of importance...
#1 Home tuneup
#2 Dyno Tuneup
#3 Headers and Exhaust
#4 Camshaft & Intake manifold
#5 Heads in some circumstances... can be marginal.
Other things that are done with only marginal or no increases over the well maintained stock system tuned up on the dyno...
-Carb, only buy if more CFM's are needed or the stocker is worn out.
-Ignition, zero performance gain over good stock unless you are replacing points.
-Synthetic oils.
If you need a good book to read try; "Performance With Economy" by David Vizard.
The 360 is an "FE" engine. Search and/or browse the FE forum. You will find out about everything you wan't to know to do everything short of a rebuild, and most of what you need for that, too.
