Wiring up step lights

I put some King Ranch steps on my truck and it doesn't have the plugs on the main bundle of wires running down the frame rail, so it's looking like I'm going to have to tap into a wire in that bundle to make them work. What wire do I need to tap into to make them work like they normally do...when I hit unlock on my keyless entry and when I open the door. However, I'm also wanting them to come on when my lights come on. I don't know if I'm going to want to keep it that way, but I at least want to try it. Does anybody know how I could wire this up?

I'm not a wiring expert, and I have not seen your steps. First of all, is there a wiring harness coming out of the step? Or is there something on the step that a harness plugs into? In order to do what you want to do there needs to be two sets of wires for power. You could splice one set into the dome light. That would allow the lights to come on when you hit your fob. The other set you could hook up to a running light. That would allow them to come on when you turn on the lights. Now, I don't know what would happen if you open the door while your lights are on. Then you would have two power supply's going to the same light at the same time. I don't know if that would matter or not. Without the right wiring harness you may only be able to run one or the other. If I could only run one, it would be to have them on with the running lights. Hopefully someone with more electrical experience will chime in here. The biggest concern that I would have is two power supply's going to the same light at the same time. You don't want to be shorting something out, blowing fuses. Good luck, it sounds like a cool project.

Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking about. If they're on because of my lights and then I open the door they'll be getting hit with 24V. But there's got to be a way to rig up some sort of relay so that when it's getting power from one it can't get power from anything else.
