YouTuber Takes Overlanding Ranger on North American Road Trip

By -

It might technically be a mid-size pickup, but Ford’s new Ranger can certainly double as a second, mobile home.

YouTuber Cody Townsend spends an awfully large amount of time driving around North America, skiing, and camping along the way. So, as you might imagine, he needs a rig that’s capable of getting him across some pretty rugged terrain. Not to mention one capable of hauling all the gear one would need to survive on such an epic journey. Thus, Townsend’s rig of choice is a 2019 Ford Ranger, which is kitted to the max with a GFC camper. Not to mention a slew of storage and organization solutions for all his subsequent gear. And this most recent video explores all of it in depth.

“This is the thing that I essentially live in and drive the entire winter,” Townsend said. “The one that gets me all around North America chasing lines.” Townsend admits he’s been a truck fan his entire life, and he’s become a big fan of his Lariat-trimmed Ranger, too. “It’s got really good efficiency,” he notes. “It’s got tons of power. And it’s actually got a lot of room inside for a being such a small truck.”

Townsend did add a few modifications to his Ranger to make it a little more capable. Not to mention a little more livable, since it’s basically his home away from home. That starts with a Rad Flow 2.5″ suspension lift kit, which is a custom, built-to-order setup. “I can fly through potholes at 60 mph and not even feel remotely feel them,” Townsend says. The suspension also utilizes Total Chaos upper control arms. Add in a set of the ever-popular 34″ BFGoodrich K02 tires, and you’ve got a truly capable package.

Head around back and open the tailgate, and this Ranger is all business. In addition to the aforementioned camper, Townsend has built a custom shelf in the bed, along with a drawer that holds all his gear. Inside of that, you’ll find a Thule gear organization system that’s specifically designed for living out of a vehicle and holds tons of clothing. On top of the box lies a pair of Yeti coolers for cold items and water, as well as a bunch of cooking equipment.

Add it all up, and you’ve got one capable, utilitarian rig for epic ski adventures all over the continent. Townsend is obviously quite pleased with the way his Ranger turned out. And we’re quite impressed with the sheer amount of stuff that it’s capable of carrying. But then again, at this point, given everything we’ve seen, should we ever doubt Ford’s reborn Ranger?
