‘Ford Trucks’ Member Asks, Would You Buy a Rusty ’67 F-250?

Partially restored Ford F-250 looks great from 15 feet and has little rust underneath, but other red flags emerge.

We’ve all been there. You find a great deal on a Ford truck somewhere, and judging by the pictures, it almost looks too good to be true. But then you roll up, take a deeper look, and quickly discover that it is. When you’re talking about older vehicles, there’s always a trade-off between condition and price. And it’s up to us to decide just how much of a project we want to take on. Ford Truck Enthusiasts member folkguy recently faced this dilemma in regards to a 1967 Ford F-250 for sale near him. But he did the smart thing and headed to the forums for some advice before plunking down his hard-earned cash.

“I’m looking at a tempting, somewhat restored ’67 F-250 Camper Special my neighbor down the street is selling. He bought it already in its current state with paint, trim, interior, etc. looking sharp. It wasn’t a full down-to-the-steel repaint or frame off restoration, but it’s a looker from 15 feet or more. I can live with a few flaws and a little rust peaking through on the bed, or rust scars on the door corners. My main concern is this rust area I noticed on the frame itself. I’d appreciate thoughts from the forum. Is it a big deal? Small deal? Don’t worry about it? Deal breaker?”

On the outside, this classic Ford certainly looks good. But the OP also shares some pictures of the underbody and chassis areas that reveal some rust. Regardless, it doesn’t look like anything that would scare off most of the OP’s fellow members.

“If that’s the biggest spot of rust on the frame, I would go for it. That’s an easy fix,” said lilorbie.

“From what I can see, the frame and such looks good. All but the little spot below the hitch and some rot on the one set of leaf springs. Shouldn’t be a big deal to reinforce the area by the hitch and get new springs,” added ’65Ford.

Some, like Freightrain, don’t see any reason for concern at all.

“That thing is spotless. That old weld from another hitch/bumper is no worry. Springs, ya, some ones wouldn’t hurt. Beyond that, it’s a very, very nice looking truck. I would check the cab mounts, drip rail around windshield, core support, and inner fenders. The bottom side looks nice.”

After some more in-depth research and help from other forum members, the OP ultimately decided to skip this purchase, however. Turns out, the seller was just asking a bit too much given the truck’s condition. But this post is a perfect example of how the FTE forums can be a very valuable resource for those looking to buy a classic Ford pickup.
