Ford Truck Sales Enjoy Big Boost in the Third Quarter of 2023
Ford truck sales increased by nearly 17 percent year-over-year in Q3 2023 even as supply chain issues and the UAW strike loomed.
It’s no secret that Ford has faced its fair share of adversity over the past few years, and 2023 has been no exception. While supply chain issues have eased somewhat, which has helped the automaker ramp up production and fill empty dealer lots, soaring inflation, rising interest rates, and the recent six-week-long United Auto Workers (UAW) strike have proven to be major obstacles on the path back to normalcy. Regardless, none of these things proved to be too much of a burden in terms of Ford truck sales, which enjoyed a 16.73 percent increase in the third quarter, according to the automaker’s Q3 sales report.
This collection of Ford truck sales includes the Ford Maverick, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150, and Ford Super Duty, which combined to move a grand total of 218,290 units in the third quarter of the year. As one might imagine, the majority of that figure came from the venerable F-Series, which accounted for 186,974 units and a 16 percent year-over-year increase compared to Q3 in 2022. However, it wasn’t the only model that enjoyed a robust quarter in terms of sales.
The Maverick actually ranked as Ford’s second best-selling pickup model, recording 23,931 sales compared to 13,049 last year, which is a significant increase of 83.39 percent. This is particularly interesting given the fact that Ford has struggled to build enough Mavericks to satisfy demand since it launched for the 2022 model year, but has invested in the Hermosillo plant by adding a third shift and other improvements designed to expand its production capacity – which bodes well for the compact pickup’s future outlook.
Next up, we have the Ford Ranger, which is the only Blue Oval pickup to experience a year-over-year decrease in sales. Ford sold a grand total of 7,385 Rangers in Q3 2023 compared to 12,453 in Q3 2022, which is a decrease of 40.7 percent. However, there are many reasons for this, starting with the fact that the automaker began its retooling process and switched over to production of the next-generation Ranger during Q3, and the Michigan Assembly plant – where the Ranger and Bronco are built – was the first target of the UAW strike in mid-September, which shut down production of both for six weeks.
In any event, this bodes well for Ford truck sales moving forward, so long as the UAW strike doesn’t ultimately impact Super Duty inventory, in particular, as the Kentucky Truck plant was also shut down for some time. That model is fresh off its own redesign for the 2023 model year, while a refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 is set to launch early next year – meaning that the Ford truck lineup will quite literally be entirely new, or at least close to it, for the foreseeable future.
