First 2022 F-150 Lightning Delivery Customer Ditched Cybertruck for Ford
After reserving a Cybertruck and considering an R1T, the very first 2022 F-150 Lightning delivery customer has big plans for it.
2022 F-150 Lightning production began just a few weeks ago, with the first examples of the first-ever all-electric F-150 heading out on transport earlier this month. However, it appears that the very first 2022 F-150 Lightning customer has already taken delivery of that particular vehicle, and his story is one that’s particularly interesting – and perhaps indicative of what we can expect from this new world of EV pickups.
That person is Nicholas Schmidt, who lives in the tiny town of Standish, Michigan and is buying the Lightning to replace his ICE-powered F-150. Schmidt is also experienced with EVs after having owned a Tesla Model 3. As he explained to Bloomberg, Schmidt considered a Rivian R1T and had a deposit down on a Tesla Cybertruck, but as it turns out, the fact that the F-150 Lightning was first to market made it the winner in this case.
“When I bought the Tesla a few years ago, my family was real apprehensive, as farmers, just not buying into it,” Schmidt, explained. “So when there were pickup trucks coming out that were going to be EVs, I said, ‘whichever one comes first, I’ll buy it.'”” Interestingly, his family wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea that he might wind up with the Cybertruck. “Nobody could believe it because it was the ugliest thing they’d ever seen,” he said. “But it was $100 and I figured, you know, what’s the worst that could happen?”
As Schmidt revealed in the F-150 Lightning Forum, he paid MSRP for his Platinum-trimmed truck with no dealer fees or other tacked-on nonsense. Of course, that’s part of the benefit of living in a small town, we suppose. What’s also particularly interesting about Schmidt and his F-150 Lightning is that he plans on using it like a truck, and even has a camping trip planned for the near future.
Congratulations, @oneguynick! Enjoy your #F150Lightning! Can’t wait to hear how you like it. https://t.co/IZZwjUaFWV pic.twitter.com/QlpV1CERUq

“We live in the woods, and I’m looking at cornfield next to me here that was planted,” he said. “We’ll be chopping wood and hauling stuff back and forth, as well as towing a trailer. We plan on using it as a truck.”
