*Note on Cargo Dimensions: Starting with the
2000 model year, cargo dimensions for SUVs are
covered by a new SAE (Society of Automotive
Engineers) standard: J1100 “Motor Vehicle
Dimensions.” Ford Motor Company followed this new
standard when measuring the new 2001 Ford Escape’s
cargo area. The new standard has not yet been
uniformly implemented by all automotive
manufacturers. Due to this differing way of
measuring, the Escape’s rear cargo volume with the
second row seat folded is not credited with being as
generous as some of its competitors. However, using
the old SAE measuring system, Escape’s cargo
area is best-in-class.
