1978 Full size Cummins powered Bronco. This project truck was finished enough to be roadworthy on 11-25-2009. Ride quality, braking and handling make driving this thing on the street a pleasure. Power is ridiculous and with great fuel mileage. Paint will eventually be a gray and black semi-gloss WWII Iowa-class battleship camo scheme.
Engine/Drivetrain Modifications:
1991 all mechanical 5.9L Cummins turbodiesel engine, custom transmission adapter and billet flexplate from Destroked.com, C6 automatic built by Dynamic Racing Transmissions with shift points adjusted for the diesel, and a billet torque converter with 1200 rpm stall speed. Original low-mileage NP205 transfer case, stock 3.50 gears. VE44 Bosch injector pump has been upgraded with a 3200 rpm governor spring, a "Denny T" fuel pin, pump timing is advanced and the full power screw cranked in 3 turns. Custom made 3" downpipe with no muffler, running into 4" exhaust, exiting just behind the passenger door. Custom length front driveshaft with double cardan eliminated. Custom length rear driveshaft with larger 1330 joints/double cardan and yokes. Current Cummins output is est. 250 hp and 650 ft/lbs of torque.
Suspension Modifications:
Complete 6" Skyjacker suspension with poly bushings, dropped trac bar mount and dropped pitman arm. The brake booster, master cylinder and rear wheel cylinders are new '78 F350 upgrades. I also installed an F800 steering shaft u-joint for added durability. All new steering parts, new dampener and poly bushings, and all new shocks with poly bushings.
Wheels/Tires Modifications:
35" mud tires on 15" x 10" aluminum slot mags.
Interior/Exterior Modifications:
Front bucket seats from a 1993 Aerostar van, center console delete, CD/MP3/USB 240W deck with remote and high end door speakers, currently installing dual 12" subs in separate boxes in the back and dual 6x9 speakers in custom side mount boxes. Currently fabricating front overhead mounted panel for engine heater switches and pyrometer, boost and transmission temp. gauges.
Future Modifications:
S300 turbocharger, 3" inlet tubing, powerstroke intercooler, bigger injectors, 5" downpipe and exhaust. Shooting for 350hp and 750 ft/lbs on the stock pump. Piston lift pump, Moser 35 spline rear axles with detroit locker carrier, and 3.00 gears front and rear. Read more »
