What have you done with that crossmember?

That crossmember is the lowest part of the 1956 Ford F100 Truck. I have concerns it hit the ground for example on bumps.
  • How low can you go without modifiying this crossmember?
  • How did you modify the crossmember?

thank you all

I built another cross member and once I had it in place I cut this one out. It's important to make sure that the new one you may make has wide ends that "grip" the entire height of the frame rail. That Cross member helps keep the rails from twisting. I redid my trans crossmember and made it beefy enough to replace this one. I'll admit I stole the idea and the design from another member here.

Here's a pic of my frame as it is right now.

Hi ingo,

do You plan to lower the truck (drop)? If not, You don't need to worry
about that crossmember hitting the ground - even on bumpers. There is enough space underneath.

thanks Outlaw, thats a nice, clean, strong chassis.
I have a TCI IFS frontcrossmember in my Truck that should be as beefy as yours. Just my trans crossmember isn´t that beefy, maybe i have to build such a strong one too...

Hi Rico,

yes since the Truck got a TCI IFS it will be lowered.
Ja Rico, der wird tiefer. Wo im Rheinland bist du? Ich bin auch im "Rheinland"...im oberbergischen ;-)

I removed it. If your putting in an IFS your most likely adding in a much beefier crossmember a couple feet forward and boxing the frame in. You'll also be adding in a transmission member probably a little bit behind this spot.

Without out it the cab will sag and twist the frame rails out at the top..I cut mine out but left enough to bolt a modified cross member back in. Pics are in my build thread..

After reading this thread and several others on here I decided to go back and make a new member to replace the old one. The center and edges all unbolt to service the transmission.
