4WD front Hub and Brake Rotor Removal Help
Can someone help link me to a former thread or a good disassembly guide to properly disassemble the manual locking hub and removing the brake rotor and inspect and pack the wheel bearings?
I am helping a friend with his 78 Ford 4WD. It has been a very long time since I dove into 4WD front ends. The shop manual he has is pretty much useless. So far I have been able to remove the hub lock selector assembly, the big spring, the snap ring and inner axle to hub gear. But now there is a round piece in there that has 4 notches that looks to be on a bearing that I cannot extract from the hole. I cannot tell if there is another snap ring or some other devise keeping it in there. I cannot find information on getting this part out. I figured I'd try asking here before I rig up a gear puller and try removing it with a little pressure. Is there a special tool needed to get this part out? Any guidance (particularly with pictures) would greatly appreciated. |
That thing with the 4 slots is a giant nut. You need a special socket to remove it.

its spindle lock nut. find out if the axle is a dana 44 or dana 60, they both use a seperate size locknut spindle socket or wrench. shouldn't cost much more than 15$ if that

takes the afore mentioned socket. watch out. it SHOULD be cheap, but my 3/4 ton socket cost me almost $50. dunno why, but it did. my 1/2 ton socket only cost $15...
here. i went over this not too long ago. you should find all the info you need here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...g-locknut.html |
geez, crazy. i found a dana 60 one for$20 at orielly's. it was the cheapest one i could find anywhere, but that was probably 5-6 years ago
