Steering column wiring/cruise control

I'm more of a mechanical guy and electrons are so small, they're scary. I've got an issue on my 88 E350 where the cruise control gets shut off if I use my signal (like on the freeway). Yes, the cruise still works on an old rig. Crazy, huh? Anyway, the turn signals don't lock anymore...no "click" detent to keep them on, either.

I'd like to a) fix the turn signals so they work with the detent and self-cancelling shut-off when turning and b) decouple the cruise control shut-off from my turn signal level on the side of the column.

Do I need to do surgery on the column? Can I find aftermarket turn signal hardware? Does the cruise control rotary union/ring in the steering column need to be replaced? If so, where can I get them and how tricky is this?

Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Regards,
Jim Fischer
