05 250 with the 5.4 - Blowing Oil

Pulling a small trailer home from deer camp going up a small grade when I looked in the mirror and blue smoke out the back........OMG In about 1/8th of a mile it quit. Then did it again in about 30 miles........ Got home and seams to have oil coming from the back side of the engine and in the exhaust.......hmmmm any ideas?

Welcome to the forum What other information can you get for us? How many miles on the truck, can you see oil leaking anywhere(valve cover, near the rear main seal, etc), any modifications done that would affect the valve train (cam change, new heads, etc), any engine noises, etc?

After it cooled down I had a chance to get under it and it seams to have over heated the transmission......blew it out of the vent tube. May have something to do with going from 265's to 315 tires and pushing it a little...

Note: The PCV is located "inside" the driver's side valve cover and cannot be replaced. However, the dealership will sell you a new valve cover having the new PCV at a cost of $110.00.

It is an '05 truck, which has the 5R110W. There is no O/D lockout.

So, you think the transmission is on the way out? I was pulling a small trailer.......it was really shifting a lot. The 5.4 must be getting week. 145k on it now. I did just go to 315/70's and know that did not help at all!! I am thinking about going to 4:11 or 4:56....any thoughts....

running fine today, no issues with shifting, loosing fluid or funky sounds or whining. Is it worth doing the trans flush?

Yes, you should flush and change the filters. It sounds like you overheated the transmission.

Did you find the reason for the blue smoke rolling out of your engine? Was it your pcv valve? The thread changed midstream from engine smoking to overheated transmission.

Sorry about that......it was trans fluid blowing on the cross over pipe/exhaust. Trans over heated. When I thought it was oil, it was trans fluid that had been super heated by the exhaust. After it cooled down I climbed under the truck and saw the oil trail, so I new it wasn't through the exhaust. Tracked it back to the vent tube on the trans.......

The fluid in the transmission still has color to it, however, I do smell some burning. Not good, hope the flush will revive it. Thanks for all the input and welcome any other helpful hints.

The reason that I asked is that auto transmission fluid usually burns white and engine oil burns blue. I've had a vehicle before that sprayed transmission fluid out all over the hot exhaust pipes and it made clouds of white smoke roll out behind the vehicle.

Hmmmmm. Got me thinking now. Even doubting my conclusion....I know the basic smoke colors, Blue/Oil, Gas/Black, white/water usually......need to check further..

Thank you sir, it did blow blue smoke out the back....
