Don't let 'em tell you the Age of Miracles is over...
After much suffering and travail, my '86 Ranger with the cab transplant finally started tonight It's been a long haul, but how satisfying; and whoever suggested sacrificing the chicken on the hood naked by the full moon, thanks, it seems to have worked. Seriously, it runs, I suspect some vacuum leaks, but of greater concern, the gage shows no oil pressure. Anyone know where the sending unit is located? Haynes fails to mention. Thanks to everyone who's offered advice and opinions. The starter run on problem seems to have been solved by replacing the flex plate. It did not show any great deflection or wear, but now the problem is solved, and I just have to figure out how to get chicken blood off the upholstery.

there are no 2.3 Rangers here, 3.0 ore 4.0 only, but yhis engine (2.3 8v) was popular in Europe (Sierra, Scorpio and underpowered Transit))) so I remember it.
There is one Aerostar in Lygansk with 2.3 CFI. It is funny but still runs.
BTW, the chicken on the hood is the good idea, like in pre-chystian paganismic Russia... yeah!!!! and african fire dance arount truck!
