Best Shocks for a Bronco? not Bilsteins!!!

hello, I just picked up an 88 bronco for 600 bucks....didnt run. 86k origonal miles! found a broke ground, and changed the distributor and it runs great! I am so happy ive got about 750 bucks in this thing and its already a daily driver.

anyway, the carquest shocks on it look about wasted. It rides a little rough, so im gunna do shocks, ball joints, a fresh set of michelin ltx/ms tires that i have and see what that does.....(it has the single shock in the front, not the quads)

anyway, i did my reserch and bilsteins are obviously the best choice, but im not sinking 350 bucks into shocks (yet anyway). I ran the rancho rs5000's on my 87 f150 and they ride kinda rough, can anyone tell me of a good cheaper shock that i can get? mostly road driving, will go down a trail or two here and there, but no extreme off roading at all! Im gunna run with the 31 inch michelins for a while, but i might do a 2" level kit and some 33's in the future....any help would be appreciated....thanks!

I had KYB GR2s on my '95 and was very happy with them. They are not expensive and you can get Advance Auto to order them for next day pickup, free shipping but you have to pay sales tax so that part balances out.

The Gabriels that the PO put on my '96 are a lot harsher but it has the quad setup so it's not an even comparison.

Monroe makes decent shocks that won't break the bank. Why are you replacing the ball joints? Are they worn? If not, you are setting yourself up for a long weekend filled with busted knuckles.

KYB are on mine and I really like them for highway and occasional off road. PO installed them so don't know how old they are. I have put 40K on them. Note stock suspension but, I almost always tow on the road.

Interesting this thread came up as I'm looking at some new shocks myself, and on a budget. Anyone have any experience with Gabriel Ultras ? I've got a '90 EB that I'm pretty sure is on it's original suspension package. ON another note, is there a single source I can view all the bushing locations at one time ? I'm pretty sure most of the rubber is shot.

Thanks !!

I've also noticed there are some labeled as forward of the front axle ( with the quad setup ) but none labeled specifically as behind the front axle....what's with that ? I would think you would want them matched.

Thanks !
