93 AOD Overdrive Issues

I have a 93 F150 with the AOD. When shifting from drive to overdrive it shifts hard. Kinda bangs into overdrive. When downshifting from overdrive into drive, sometimes it feels like someone put the brakes on. I have changed the fluid in the pan and converter plus a new filter. I have adjusted the TV cablel. Problem still exists. The truck only has 100K miles on it. I have also noticed a very slight vibration around 55mph. Thought it was the tires. Had them rebalanced. Problem still exists. Is it possible the funky shifting in and out of overdrive and the vibration are related? Bad converter maybe? The trans shifts fine from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to drive. Thanks.

i would think if the vibration is coming from the converter you would feel at the same RPM regardless of speed.
try puting it in neutral and see if go's away.

Put the truck in neutral yesterday. Vibration was still there. Then I remembered the tire shop said 2 of the tires did have a slight lateral movement. Must be the cause for the vibration. Very minimal. I can live with it. I'm more concerned about the funky shifting in and out of overdrive. Thanks hillbilly.

pull the speed sensor on the rear end housing and clean the magnet,,,may do the trick

I cleaned the magnet on the speed sensor tonight. It seemed to help when downshifting from overdrive to drive. Didn't feel like someone was applying the brakes as much. It seemed to downshift even better when left unplugged. Just slightly though. I think I will drive it for a couple of days unplugged to see how it shifts when the trans is cold and also warmed up. I will just deal with the ABS light being on and no speedo.

Okay. I'm confused. Went to NAPA today to buy a speed sensor for the rear end. They sold me an ABS Differential Sensor. Part #530000. Not sure if it helped the shifting issues but now the speedo jumps around slightly. NAPA lists a A/Trsax Differential Speed Sensor Part #ATP16501. Is this what I need for the rear end. Seems like some people call the sensor in the rear end on the 93 F150's by different names. Not sure which one I need for the rear end. All I know is when left unplugged it doesn't downshift hard from overdrive or feel like the brakes are on. Please help. Thanks.

had similar issue

I own a 94 F-250, granted different set up, but had a similar shifting issue. I tried the rear diff., trans. service, etc. Wound up adding a bottle of Lucas oil stop slip to the trans. in park engine running. Cost about 11 or 12 bucks. Felt like new again. Saved me a few bucks considering I was ready to pull the valve body out. Lemme know how it goes.

If your transmission really is an AOD, not an AOD-E aka 4R70W, then it does not use the speed signal from the rear mounted VSS. There is no electronic control of the transmission like the E4OD and AOD-E/4R70W.

very well put-but he says he adjusted the tv cable-I thought the electronic models deleted those cables?

My trans is the regular AOD. So is the sensor on the differential called a VSS or an ABS sensor?

That is my point. If it has a TV cable it is an AOD, therefore replacing the sensor on the rear end is not going to affect the transmission operation what so ever. The signal from that sensor is used to feed the speedometer as well as the RABS circuit. My Ford manuals refer to the sensor as the VSS.

Thanks. I didn't know the diff. sensor on the AOD trucks controlled the speedo and ABS. I guess what I am feeling when the truck slows down is the brakes being applied. Just slightly. Went back to NAPA this morning to return an ABS sensor because it was making my speedo jump around only to find out it's the same sensor the have listed as a VSS. Just a different brand. A local mechanic said to change the diff. oil. He said the ring that the sensor reads may have a piece of "crud" stuck to it making the speedo jump around slightly. Thanks again for everyone's help.
