1999 f 350 srw diesel steering

My truck is wandering all over the highway and is a real bull to keep between the lines. This is amplified when towing. To date I have changed steering boxes, upper and lower ball joints and steering bearings all to no avail. Does anyone know what could be done to fix this problem? Thanks!

ball joints

what ball joints did you use? some balljoints are real tight when first installed and will loosen up with time. i also noticed you did not mention an alightment.

My 2000 f250 psd is like pushing a wet noddle down the road. I also changed both upper and lower ball joint hopeing to correct the steering and it seems like it is worse. I was looking at steering box next. Glad I read your post! I hope someone has some good advice. My father in laws 2001 f350 is doing the same as mine and maybe worse. My pickup used to drive so nice when it was new. Don't know what happened. Advice needed.

Check the bushings, wheel bearings and tie rod ends. Is it 2 or 4wd? With a bad bushing on one of the I-beams... the whole hub shifted 1/4" to either side before the tie rod started turning the wheel - not to mention that it constantly changes the toe.

2wd has bushings at the ends of the twin I beams as well as the radius arm. (Just finished doing mine - should have pics up by this weekend)

4wd has the track bar and (I believe) radius arms as well. I'm sure someone else will chime in. Taking it for an alignment in about an hour - will keep you posted. (I've already done the redhead steering box, bearings and the tie rod.)

First, new ball joints or not confirm that all other suspension items are not worn and in good cond., tires, shocks, tie-rod ends steering stabilizer, wheel bearings, u-joints (4x4)etc...as well as all bushings. Being 11 yrs old it prob. needs several upgrades if they haven't yet been done.

A proper and professional alignment is key on the SD or any truck. Most places will only check toe-in/out and adj steering wheel. Your alignment should take a 1/2 hour at a minimum for a pro shop. They will also let you know what issues you may have.

What does your truck have on it now... about 134 miles?

As mentioned above, make sure you are taking it to an alignment shop that knows how to align these trucks. A generic shop may not bother to look at any of the TSB on the subject and assume your truck is just like the Dodge he did yesterday.
