im looking to drop the pan on my truck soon and would like to know how many quarts of atf it will take to fill it back up, what fluid do you think i should use?
Been thinking about doing mine too. Are these syn trans fluids? Looking for one of those drain plugs that you can install on the pan to get the fluid out before you drop the pan. always used these and have never had a prob with leaking or whatever. Of course you have to drop the pan to install it, but much less mess, and with this plug you will drain some of that fluid out more often. A 40 yr trans mechanic once told me that if people changed their fluid once a yr, he wouldnt have any business.

Reason: more info
This is my 3rd AOD type transmission.Every time i've dropped the pan all I added was 4 quarts, which put the level just inside the cross hatch mark on the dipstick.
If you read the Haynes manuals they actually say that if the transmission is dry it could take up to 10 qts but since we don't dry fill transmissions it is usually somewhere between 4-5 quarts will fill it up.
If you were to do a transmission fluid replacement as described in other threads by using the trans cooler lines, you would need upwards of 13.9 quarts. That is the capacity of the trans.
4th for me actually......and both my 05 and 07 took 5 quarts at change.....you checked while running and warm right???
Yes,after driving about 10 miles. While running, putting the tranny in every gear,on a level ground,I check it,in park. 4 quarts puts it just in the cross hatch area. Now,if I were to add a half quart more it would probably put it at the top of the cross hatch area. But why do that when the dipstick reads"DO NOT ADD IF IN THE CROSS HATCH AREA"?
I just did mine today along with putting in a drain plug and it took 5 quarts. I put in 4 ran it about 15 miles and checked it it was low so I put in another quart. 2005 5.4 xlt supercrew.
