2000 F350 7.3 TURBO DIESEL WITH MASSIVE OIL LOSS

i have a 2000 <NOBR style="FONT-FAMILY: inherit; COLOR: darkblue; FONT-WEIGHT: bold" id=itxt_nobr_0_0>f350</NOBR> with a 7.3 turbo diesel. I had a bad injector, fuel in oil, oil was being sucked through turbo and out the exhaust. after replacing bad injector found oil leaking at accuator at turbo took it apart plugged hole, drove good for about a week now i cant keep oil in it.. turbo is very wet on the inside and smokes out the exhaust it has a burnt smell.... have put over 24 quarts in truck in 2 days there are no leaks ..

Did you unplug the EBP sensor when you plugged the actuator hole?

If you have no external leaks, have a very wet turbo on the inside, I'm guessing you're also a little down on power? How much play is in the shaft inside the turbo? I'm guessing time for a turbo rebuild.

Any funny noises or popping sounds?

Yes you need to unplug the harness down at the pedestal or you will starve your turbo of oil when the computer tries to activate the actuator that no longer exists.

Is the oil inside the intake or exhaust side of the turbo? Have you checked blowby?

Oil inside turbo housing and smoking out exhaust indicates bad seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. As you have found, a whole lot of oil gets used. If you wipe the inside of the exhaust, I bet it's wet with oil also.

After it gets repaired it will take quite a while for all the oil to burn out of the exhaust system.

Major oil loss

Did you rebuild your turbo? Did it fix your problem? I'm doing a 99 with the same problem. 2 quarts of oil in 15 miles. The down pipe is turning black, a lot of oil smoke from rear of engine, when running, but no oil on ground..but there is no play in the turbo wheel. I thought it was the injector o-rings, I had one bad. Replaced them. Put it back together. Same problem. I'm fighting with myself about rebuilding the turbo... Mainly because my fat tail is tired of crawling around on this engine..

Its an old thread, its easy to rebuild them there alot of good threads regarding turbo rebuilds. Also you make sure that you lubed the injector o rings real good before installing them? Also what brand of O rings only use Motorcraft or Alliant(same rhing different package.

Alliant o-rings
At idle I am running around 485psi high pressure oil. I haven't checked it under a load.
But the turbo sucking that much oil still doesn't make since. I've ran about 6 gallons of oil through this thing. Oil should be running out of something.i can let it idle for an hour and it'll still use about a quart

Yup, a bad turbo seal can get rid of 2 gallons in less than a 100mile drive. Hows the blow by on that engine?

You should check your fuel filter if it is black you have a bad set of injector orings and the oil is being sent back into the fuel tank.

Yep. Fuel filter was black. I did the O-rings, thinking I had found the problem when I found 1 bad one. Put it back together and it ran a lot better, but is stil sucking oil.

Where did the injectors come from and how long ago did you get them? Is there wet oil in the exhaust? Or are you just using a lot and getting smoke?

Original injectors other than one. I kept getting a code on #8 injector, so I swapped it to #4 hole. Then it threw a code for #4. I had a set for another truck. So I replaced it. I wasn't getting a wet exhaust till I replaced the O-rings.. Of coarse it got wet after, but I assumed it was from the Deisel and oil getting into cylinders while pulling injectors. That is drying up. Now.. But still sucking oil. I'm going to pull the turbo on Monday and rebuild it. I hope something is obvious.. The truck has some blow by but runs too good to have a burnt piston or broke rings.. At least in my mind.

How much blow by? Does the cap get blown off when flipped up side down? If so thats too much and oil is being sucked from the ccv to the intercooler then getting sucked to the cylinders.
