Making a crew cab (1948 thru 1952

It seems that I keep accumulating these trucks and I'm considering making something unusual to haul my old farm tractors.crawlers, and horse trailer.

I'm inspired by "Irondragon's" stretch cab, and the 1950 F-8 sleeper cab.

How about a crew cab? Does anyone know of this being done for a 1948 thru 1952 cab?

I was looking at my cabs and the cab tapers considerably from the cowl to the back. My first thought was to cut off the back and insert a second cab, but the cowl area is much narrower than the rear of the cab.

We, also, have horses and I have a 4 horse trailer. In warm weather we'll go trail riding at the state parks. The problem with this is that I have a '98 F-250 with regular cab. Thus, all 4 of us will cram into the cab.

I thought it would be cool to have an old hauler crew cab.

Making a crew cab (1948 thru 1952

Ah, I've created a monster.

Well, obviously I've been doing a bit of research on attacking a truck and making a extended cab. From what I have seen there are many ways of going about it, guess it just depends on the builder.

I think for a full 4 door cab you could use 2 cabs to make one, but as you noticed Ken, a normal cab does taper front to back quite a bit. I think with the "back cab" you would have to somehow split the roof and floor to widen it with wedge shaped pieces of sheetmetal (like they did with the F-8), to blend it into the other cab.

With my 2 door extended cab, I simply used a set of doorskins off some junk doors to make my fillers and the extended portion of the cab goes straight back (the taper stops at the rear of the doors)

I guess by the time my truck is show worthy, I'll be parked in a lot full of extended cabs, eh, so much for originality, but hey, they will all look cool.

Hi Ken, How did your crewcab turn out. I am thinking about doing the same with my '52 F7 Marmon.

For your first post you sure dug up an ancient post.

What condition is you M-H in? Be careful, to some M-H faithful on the board altering a M-H is sacrilegious, hope you donned your asbestos underwear.

You can likely thank Google for that.

Hey, it's not necessarily not good to dig up old posts. That's that's why there's a search feature on the site.

Don, I hope you'll stick around. We have Darksiders, stock restorers and daily drivers, we're all welcome. Just be aware of Truckdog, he's our resident wheel and M-H guru. He might not enjoy some one messing with a M-H. He won't bite though, he's actually a pretty nice guy and some one you might want to get to know. He got a well stocked library on wheels and M-Hs.

Look at 48fordcoe for info on putting two cabs together, his coe has a 51 F1 cab turned around backwards, both rear cab sections removed then the cowl removed on the back cab and the rear attached and it looks great and it only took him 4 months from start to finished, paint and all, check out his gallary.

I wondered if you'd aimed that at me! But I don't see anything wrong with making user friendly "improvements" to a M-H. I just think M-Hs need to be preserved. And heck, doing one as a crew cab would be a great idea. And don't you remember all the speculation we had about converting one to a Campbell woodie? And last, mine is not gonna be done purely as M-H did it. I've got 4.11 gears now, a set of 19.5s to go on one of the trucks, and I might go really dark side by putting in softer F-2 springs . They were an option on F-3s after all. Stu

Beat me to the punch, lol!

Within a year ago or so, someone came on here wanting to sell a crewcab 4x4 too.

Here it is: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...n-ford-f1.html not a four door, but the cab is longer than the F8 sleeper, IIRC.

Hope I don't get kicked out of the "stocker" club for opening up about all that . It'd break my heart....yeah, right.

I'll add another real common example of M-Hs getting "improved" upon. Think about all the M-H car woodies that exist today that started life as regular M-H converted cars, sedan deliveries, and half tons. There's probably more today than were originally produced. They have gotten to be so valuable that other honest old M-Hs have been cut up and made into woodie donors. I do think that's a shame. But, looking at it from the other angle, so many old M-H trucks have been beaten to death during their service lives that they may be only good as donor vehicles. Stu

That's really neat how you did that. Any more pics with the roof done?
