EGR Cooler / Oil Cooler Replacement

Ok, I have extensively read posts on this forum regarding all the pros/cons of EGR coolers. I have a leaking EGR cooler and need to replace it. I do most of my mechanic work myself, but I have a question. Do I need to replace the oil cooler at this time also? I am short on funds so if not necesary I don't want to, however I don't want the new EGR cooler to fail quickly because I didn't. I have a Dasdaq and my EOT and ECT run well below 15 degrees difference. Only when I am pulling my travel trailer hard at 70 mph on hard grades or against a strong headwind do I get up to the 15 degree difference and I have had a slightly larger difference, but it doesn't last long. Most of what I have read says that if the oil cooler is plugged or restricted the difference will be more than the 15 deg. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks - David

I don't know how to test an oil cooler efficiency other than the EOT vs ECT temps. But I can say that there is no way in hell I would get that deep into the engine without doing both. You can get the OC kit for between $2-300.

I would do both.

I would also use this EGR cooler over the stock one

Steve, I have read that their cooler is heavier duty but I think I also read that they are only about 80% as efficient as the stock coolers. That translates into higher temps. if true.

I can see where they might not be as efficient since there isn't as much area for heat transfer...I guess the only question in that regard is how much if any difference it makes in performance/longevity. It's been a little over 15k miles since mine was installed, which is nothing as far as longevity goes, but I've noticed no difference in performance.

Steve, How do your ect/eot spreads compare realizing that you were having a failure prior to the change.

I don't have the means to monitor them...I'm walking barefoot That's going to change soon though.

Do the entire repair! It's about 12 - 16 hours of work but it goes smoothly. Folks on this forum are great help. If you do not do the entire repair, I promise you you will be doing it again soon.

STEVE!!!!!!!!!! Your crazy!

Have you had any EGR valve issues before and/or after the BPD cooler was installed?

Something in me says the mildy warmer air might reduce the sticking of the soot to the EGR valve. But what do I really know

Zero issues Newman....never had a problem with a dirty EGR before or since, except for when the cooler went South.

When should the spreads be taken? On the freeway or at idle or climbing a hill. Just not sure as they seem to vary at different times.

Just my experience but the most stable readings are when the truck is under a decent load on the highway or cruising at a constant speed. I read the EOT and ECT with my scangauge and then I have a second additional EOT gauge installed on the top of my oil filter cap. On a typical trip towing my engine EOT reading is about 210-215 with ECT at 200ish. The extra EOT gauge reads a bit lower, like 205-210. If I blast a steep hill at 70 MPH I have seen the EOT jump to 230 with the ECT at 215ish but it seems to recover real fast at the top of the hill. I also should be more easy on the throttle but it's SO much fun to finally have some torque under me.

There is a great thread here where bismic lists the temperature values he has derived from a combination of Ford specs and people's experiences. I think my experience is generally in that range...
