bad coil pack ???
on a v6 4.2 lit. 2000 f150, i have all wires wired correct, except for # 5 and 6. coil pack shows driver side of coil is 4-5-6 from firewall to front of truck. engine fires 4-5-6 from front of truck towards the firewall ( opposite each other). i have #4 plug wire in number 4 on the coil, #5 plug wire in #6 on coil and #6 plug wire in #5 on coil. of course there is almost a dead miss at idle and it runs fine while driving it. but when i plug 4-5-6 plug wires into correct spots on coil it missed bad idling and while running, wont hardly run at all.
coil plug wires
4-------4
5-------6
6-------5 (this is how it is wired right now, if i wire it correctly to 5 to 5 and 6 to 6 it misses so bad it will not run.
could the coil pack be bad or like auto zone told me pack will not mess up like this, it is either good or bad, no in between.
what in the world could be wrong with this engine???

thanks, but the order on the coil pack is the opposite on the driver side. they run 4,5,6 from back to front. i plug #4 wire into #4 on the coil. #5 into ((( #6))) on coil and #6 into #5 on coil. this should give me a bad miss but it does only at low idle and runs good. when i wire it correctly 4 to 4, 5 to 5 and 6 to 6, it misses at low idle and while running that u cant drive it. this is the question, why do i have to intentionlly have to miswire the coil to get it to run.thanks so much. ((( can the coil short out and cause this or is coil bad and not work or can it go out like this).

Test for spark output on the offending cylinder when wired correctly.
If that cylinder is the only one to miss when it's turn comes, then then you should be wired right and that coil pak is faulty.
Normaly misswiring never is a solution to an issue.
The PCM knows what the fire order is and triggers the electronics in the coil paks for the correct cylinder based on the cam position drive sensor output.
As another help, if you clear all codes; with the wireing correct, the PCM should confirm the missing cylinder next time you start the motor.
How this is done is the PCM measures the crank rotation time from the crank sensor and knows which cylinder is the one not contributing to the 'expected' crank rotation time when compaied to normal cylinder averages stored in a table, when it's turn comes.

thanks again for the info. dont know whats up. i installed a new coil pack and i had to wire it the same way to get it to start and run. i have a problem and might have to go to a mechanic. #5 still shows up as not firing when it is read with code reader etc...but it has plenty of fire when i remove the wire from the coil pack while running, has as much spark as the other cylinders. it is getting fuel also. just about tired of messin with it. thanks again, chris
