Fuel Line Quick Disconnect '96 F150

I have a cheap fuel line disconnect tool from O'Reilly Auto. I cannot get it to work to disconnect my rear fuel pump. Is it just because the tool doesn't quite hit the springs right, or what am I doing wrong? I've watched several videos where people seem to get them off fairly easily, & I push on the connection in the same way, but it just stays in place. I'd love to get this changed so I can drive this truck again.
Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Hard to say: maybe a combination of the tool not completely releasing the spring and corrosion? You're positive that you are using the correct size?

htownoag--
Are you saying that the OEM style will work better than the cheap O'Reilly one? My cheap one looks almost exactly like that picture.

Corrosion is very possible.

Clean grit out of the coupler with something. Carb cleaner, WD40, etc & blow out with compressed air if possible. Spray again, then try. Also sometimes the plastic ones work better over the scissor style.

They baffle me as to why they work flawlessly sometimes & others, nearly impossible.

It also helps "sometimes" to push the connection together before inserting the tool... Also I know you know this, but a reminder anyway... Be sure the pressure is relieved...

Hope you get it...

I have always used the plastic ones and had good luck. First time I changed the fuel filter in the '94 it took quite a while to get it to let got.

Thanks all. I'll see what I can accomplish. Are the plastic disconnect tooks sold at most of the auto parts stores?

Throw that aluminum, scissors-shaped thing in the frickin' garbage.

Go to Autozone, or wherever, and get the colored set, blue, gold, and two others. It's not cheap, but good tools never are.

I fought with that same fitting using the cheap scissors thing for an hour. Bought the better tools and had it apart in less than a minute.

seschenburg-
That's what I like to hear! I know good tools aren't cheap & neither is shop labor! I got the tank out, I don't want to give up now!

Thanks again, guys. I'll get a better tool set & see how that goes.

Exactly this. Those scissor style ones are a pita. I've always fought with them. The colored single size ones always work better for me.

Just like any other tool, multiple types for multiple applications.

I have 3 sets, all inexpensive. (some cheap) Some work where others don't.

The scissor type work well in places where having a handle for leverage is advantageous. Wouldn't count them totally out.
