fuel filter canister removal

Time to tune up the '66 F350 I purchased last winter. The fuel filter canister won't budge - probably last changed when Reagan was in the White House.

Any tricks to removing a stuck fuel filter canister?
Is there a tool that fits over the bottom?

Thanks, Tony

A pare of pliers with a towels to keep from crushing the cansiter works sometimes; just keep the pliers up on the top portion of the cansiter. If you attempt to turn in the middle you can collaspe the bowel. Use some PB Blaster or other rust buster along the lip to hopefully lossen the tarnish fuel and debris as well.
If you have a strape type wrench; craftsmans & harbor freight sell this type of tool as well as plumber type tools stores; you can use it to turn the cansiter as well.
I also have use a pare of pliers that are specfic for oil changing; they have teeth along the lip to grip; but again don't put pressure on the cansiter in the middle due to it will collapse.
Hope this helps; I'm sure there's a proper tool made; but I'm lacking in that department.
If you can I would visit Napa for advise as well;' and try & get a psare one from a salvage truck for back-up.

Thanks

I've tried all of these options. None of the strap wrenches are small enough to fit the canister.

I may just purchase a new canister and use brute force

I had the same problem so I bought a new one for under 30 bucks at the A zone. I took the new one apart (also not easy) and oiled the threads and rubber seal for easy future removals. I opened the old one after removing it but had to put it in a vise. These things freeze up like crazy.

I went to a lot of trouble once to open one of those puppies, ruined it too. Finley got it off and found it to be very clean inside. A total waste.

On the bottom...original ones have a huge hex head stamped in it...a carefully placed and covered crescent wrench should do it.. Make sure the cannister and the area immediately above it is clean and free of grease...dry, wash hands, dry...then get under the truck and get up close and personal...and remember lefty loosy(counter clockwise), righty tighty(clockwise...as you are under the can looking upward at it...it is hard to break loose...but not impossible...a good grip and it will move...the gasket is about 1/8" thick and has a good seal usually .

I have an old pump from a FTE member here who replaced his pump...can looks good...but that filter looked dreadful...NEVER seen ANY filter that nasty...

Im assuming your truck has the 352...6 cylinders are can side up.

I just talked to the guy at Airtex and he told me they don't make a wrench for the canister. He was also very helpful (NOT) in being able to provide me with some dimensions or a drawing so i can make my own spanner wrench.

kahunatim Welcome to and the Slicks Forum.

First off you are responding to a 4 year old post. Airtex is not a tool maker as noted. Try one of the rubber band pullers to see if you can turn yours off.

I replaced my pump and put Vaseline on the seal and a year later is was still so tight I had to get and old belt and some pliers to get it off. I put the strap around the bottom of the canister.

I think the pump was around $40 at Autozone. They are wear items so I replaced the pump as insurance I would not fill the oil pan with gasoline.

I fixed my with an electronic fuel pump! You can hide a switch and a fuse to make it theft proof.

Howdy,
I had to use a strap wrench with a ratchet to remove my fuel filter. Dented the canister a little, but came off with out a problem. Good luck.
